200 Main Street - Request for Proposals and Qualifications for Developers Released
This week the Village of Ossining released a Request For Proposals for 200 Main Street. The Village is seeking a qualified developer to purchase, restore and redevelop 200 Main Street collaborating with the Village and the Ossining community in the re-development of this beautiful, architecturally significant structure which sits on a parcel of property, adjacent to Route 9, totaling approximately 6,100 square feet or 0.14+/- acres; the property will be sold “as is”. Village Named Recipient of the Westchester Water Works Conference’s “Water System Advancement Award” For the second year in a row, the Village of Ossining has been named the recipient of this award. The award recognizes the improvements made during the latest phase of the Village’s Indian Brook Water Filtration Plant upgrade including an air structure that covers much of the recently reconstructed mechanical systems recognized in last year’s award.
Ossining Matters 5K Trail Race and 2 Mile Walk to benefit Ossining MATTERS Education Foundation will be held on Saturday, September 8th. The race kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the Double Arch at the Old Croton Aqueduct adjacent to the Caputo Community Center 95 Broadway, registration on-line and by mail, race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m.at the Caputo Community Center, for further information visit the website www.OssiningMATTERS.org.
There will be an informational meeting on Community Land Trusts for Housing, Saturday, September 8th at 11:00 a.m. at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, 95 Broadway. All residents are invited to attend.
Special Benefit Concert to be held on September 8th, 2007 from 2-4 p.m. in the theater at Ossining Public Library. Seniors Oliva Oppedisano and members of High Voltage: Max Gulian, Lee Saper, Jesse McCormick, Scott Peller and Jake Schofield, will perform at a gala fund-raising event to raise money for the scholarship fund in the name of Noah Woodley -Aitchison. This scholarship is awarded to OHS seniors at the end of their senior year. This concert will raise money for the fund and help those awarded with their educational expenses. Singer/songwriter Fred Gillen, Jr. will be master of ceremonies for this special Saturday afternoon concert.
New Garden Dedicated to Ossining Seniors Thanks to Susanne Leslie, 16, who has created a flower and vegetable garden off the patio at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center as a community betterment project for her attaining the Girl Scout’s highest honor, the Gold Award. Miss Leslie decided to do a project that would benefit senior citizens who meet weekly at the Community Center. The new garden is dedicated to the area’s seniors who can now sit on two new benches, which were donated as part of the project, or just stroll through and enjoy the beautiful flowers and plants.
Municipal Building Improvements The first phase of renovations to the ground floor of Village Hall at 16 Croton Avenue is underway. This work includes the demolition and refinishing of offices on the first floor, the former jail cells, and former police administration offices. Areas undergoing renovation have not been updated or improved for many decades. The work will be completed in two consecutive phases with a projected completion date of early 2008.
Work to Repave and Re-stripe Route 9 from the Northern Part of Revolutionary Road to Route 117 Has Begun Work is estimated to be completed within several weeks depending on weather conditions. Besides the repaving of Route 9, the re-striping of the road will reflect a new traffic pattern in order to make the road safer for motorists and pedestrians. Left hand turning lanes will be designated and single lanes will be made wider and safer. This project is the culmination of meetings between the NYSDOT, Assemblywoman Galef, local officials, and the community over several years to develop this new, safer traffic plan.
The Ossining High School class of 1952 in conjunction with the Ossining Public Library has invited Douglas Parker, a 1952 alum to speak at the library on Saturday, September 15th @ 2:00 p.m. about his biography on Ogden Nash titled: "Ogden Nash: The Life and Work of America's Laureate of Light Verse." Doug's talk will describe his experience in writing the book, published in 2005, recount some of the highlights of Nash's life including stints as a Hollywood screenwriter, lyricist on and off Broadway and performer on radio and TV, and he will read excerpts from some of Nash's most provocative and entertaining verse. The talk will take place in the theater on the lower level.
2007 Ferry-Go-Round – Sunday, September 16th 11am to 6pm The fourth "Hudson Ferry-Go-Round" returns to the region linking towns along the Hudson River with continuous ferries. NY Waterway ferries travel between Peekskill, Haverstraw, Ossining and Tarrytown. The public can board on a first-come, first-served basis, approximately every 40 to 60 minutes. FREE transportation will connect ferry landings with events in the participating communities. Ferry-Go-Round All-Day Passes are: $10 adults, $5 seniors and free for kids 17 and under with a ticketed adult. For additional information visit the website at the website.
Call for Artists: The Ossining’s Treasures an Arts Festival is scheduled for Sunday, September 16. Display space for artists is available at a minimum charge and food vendors are welcome. Ossining High School Scholarship -- Attention classes of 1946 – 1970 An effort is underway to develop a scholarship at OHS to honor the memory of Raymond Hughes, a great English teacher who was at OHS from 1946 to 1970. This project already has raised nearly $3,000 and the target is $20,000. The money is being invested by the school board and each year 85% of the income will be awarded to a graduating senior as an English prize and 15% will increase the investment so that the prize will increase each year, ad infinitum. Seven classes are now working on the effort but there is a need for e-mail addresses for members of the classes of '46, '47 '48, '50, '53, '54, '56, '57, '59, '60, '61, '62, '64, '65, '67, '68, and ' 70. The Ossining Farmers Market is open The market runs each Saturday through December 15th from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Located at Market Square corner of Main and Spring St. Come to the market to buy farm fresh foods from the Hudson Valley.
