Sunday, November 11, Ossining Veterans’ Day observances will begin with 10:00 a.m.mass of observance at St. Augustine’s Church, followed by a ceremony at the Veterans’ Memorial at Nelson Park, beginning at 11 am.  Please join with your neighbors in thanking those who serve us.

Thursday, November 15, at 7 pm, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is having a Community Forum to inform the public about the services of the AG’s office.  The meeting will be held at the Westchester County Center, is free, open to the public, and they will even have refreshments. Donate a used Bike to the Get a Bike - Ride a Bike Program The Ossining Rotary Club and the Ossining Recreation and Parks Department are co-sponsoring a “Recycle Your Bike” program.  We will be collecting used bikes at the Community Center. The Rotary Club will work to refurbish the bikes and then we will offer the bikes free (while they last) to any child in Ossining who would like one. The Ossining Police Athletic League has agreed to provide 50 new bike helmets to the first 50 children who take a bike. We will collect bikes up until November 27th.   If you have a bike in good or fair condition (minor repairs are ok) please bring it to the Ossining Community Center and leave it by the pool center entrance. Ossining Public Library Teen Movie Nights The library will be showing movies for teens in their theater.  Admission and refreshments for these events are free. The first in the series will be “Transformers” shown on Monday, November 12th at 2:00 p.m. in the theater.  On Friday, November 16th “Spiderman 3” will be shown at 5:00 p.m. For additional information call Tamara Stewart 941-2416 ext. 317 or the Teen Room at ext. 336.

 

Westchester Urban County Consortium, FY 2009-2014 Consolidated Plan Public Meeting Wednesday, November 14th The County Department of Planning is in the process of developing the Consolidated Plan for Fiscal Years 2009-2014 to cover federal grants to the Westchester Urban County Consortium.  The Consolidated Plan is a document that provides a strategic plan to address long-term goals for the development of viable communities through the use of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG), HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) and American Dream Down payment Initiative (ADDI) grants.  Citizens, public agencies, local government and other interested parties are invited to attend this public meeting to discuss the housing and non-housing community development needs within the Consortium communities.  The public meeting will be held:  Wednesday, November 14th, at 7:00 p.m., at the Ossining Community Center, 95 Broadway.  For additional information regarding the meeting, please contact Norma V. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center Healthy Life Program Series Continues In November and December The public is invited to attend programs on a broad range of health-related subjects, such as caregiving, defensive driving, and relaxation, which are relevant to many people. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for November and December follows:

·         Monday, November 12, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Voice Problem Screening. This screening will help determine whether certain symptoms, such as hoarseness, change in voice, breathiness or other discomfort, may indicate a problem with the voice box. Problems affecting the voice box can include nodules, polyps, cysts, paralysis, reflux, and even cancer. Presented by Dr. Craig H. ·         Tuesday, November 13, 7 to 9 p.m. Who is Caring for the Caregiver? This program will offer an overview of services available through the Family Caregiver Support Program of the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs & Services. ·         Tuesday, November 13, 7 p.m.: Better Breather's Club. Program participants will learn about "The Vest," a device that aids airway clearance. ·         Monday, December 17, 7 to 9 p.m.: Mental Imagery Methods for Relaxation and Holistic Healing. This program explores how mental imagery can affect the body, mind, and spirit. Upcoming Events at the OPL…

"The Kress Family Legacy" will be the topic of an up-coming  program on Wednesday, November 14 @ 7:30 p.m. Steven Worthy will offer a multi-media presentation about the Kress family who owned a 72 acre estate bordering the Towns of Ossining and New Castle from 1916-1959. Today we know the Ossining area as the Cedar Lane Park. The Kress family was famous for the 400  5, 10, & 25 cent stores they started, as well as collectors of some of the world's most famous pieces of art, now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.The program is co-sponsored by the Ossining Historical Society Museum and the Ossining Public library

*"Three Tall Women" by Pulitizer Prize winning author Edward Albee will be on the OPL stage Thursday, November 15 @ 7:30 p.m. This M&M production starring Christine D'Amato, Christine Lorenzo and Sarah Smegal was directed by Larry Schneider. Free.

* “The Image Makers”: photography exhibit presented by members of the Westchester Photographic Society continues through November 9 it is on view on the lower level.  Coming in mid-November is an exhibit by local artist and long time resident Edward Malsberg. The exhibit, a family affair, includes works by his son and grandson.  On view until December 21.

 

Ossining High School Performing Arts Proudly Presents “You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown” at the Ossining High School Auditorium 29 S. Highland Ave. Ossining.  Admission is FREE.  Performances are Thursday, Nov. 8th at 4PM, Friday, Nov. 9th at 7PM, Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7PM & Sunday, Nov 11th at 2PM.

 

Veterans Day Dinner & Cabaret Musical Revue with a live auction and raffle drawing.

Trinity Church will host its annual Veterans Day Dinner on Saturday, 10 November beginning at 5pm with appetizers and libations. Cost $20/person; Veterans and Seniors $10.  The evening will include a musical revue with songs from WWII and the musical theatre - including "Wicked", "Little Shop of Horrors," "Once Upon a Mattress" and other cabaret standards. The auction will offer a Hawaiian Luau at "Eagles Nest" and Medallion Rose china. The raffle items have to be seen to be believed! Tickets are on sale now and will be available on Saturday. The Ossining Lions Club is meeting at the Community Center on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.  The guest speaker will be Miriam Haas, Director of Community Markets. Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion “Planes Trains and Automobiles” Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The latest offering of the new international film festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be shown on Friday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll Society Center, 55 Ryder Road, Ossining.  The series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: God’s Self-sacrificing Love Revealed in Relationships, continues with “Planes Trains and Automobiles”, a 1987 U.S. film from director John Hughes.  Each film will be introduced by a Maryknoll missioner who will facilitate a brief discussion following the screening.  For a listing of all films in the series visit here.  All are welcome.  Admission is free.  For additional information call 914-941-7590.  Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the U.S.-based Catholic foreign mission society, has been representing U.S. Catholics in overseas mission since 1911. Ossining Children’s Center 2007 Festive Stroll of Homes The Ossining Children’s Center, 2007 Festive Stroll of Homes will include tours of select homes in Briarcliff and Ossining, decorated in innovative holiday themes. Lunch at the nationally acclaimed Trump National Golf Club will follow the house tour.  Festive Strollers are also invited to Holbrook Cottage to join the home designers at a champagne reception.  November 16th-17th. The 43rd Annual Artists of Northern Westchester show is being held from November 18th-25th.  About 100 painters and sculptors from the area are shown at this annual event.  Exhibit Hours are 2-5 p.m. daily, including Thanksgiving, with evening hours on Mon., Tues., and Wed., 6-8 p.m.  An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, November 17th, from 4-6 p.m. everyone is invited.  Art Sunday Lecture will be held on November 18th at 9:00 am and 11:00 a.m."From Start to Finish: the Creative Process,"presented by Andrew Lattimore, a distinguished painter and a very popular teacher at the Westchester Community College Art Workshop.  All events are sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship but open to the public and will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Briarcliff, Croton, and Ossining on Route 9A in Croton.  For directions or additional information please go to the website.

 

Join the Call To Action. It's Time to Save Our Planet! Nadia Elrokhsy, Assistant Professor Sustainable Design at Parsons The New School for Design will give a live presentation of the slide show that's changing America's mind, “An Inconvenient Truth”, on Monday evening, November 19th at 7:00 p.m. The program will take place in the library theater.   Nadia completed Al Gore's Climate Project Training and has been giving presentations throughout the New York area in 2007. The Climate Project is a national, independent movement to educate and challenge citizens and governments to take action against the rising crisis of global warming.  In addition to the slideshow a group of community retailers and consultants who are "doing Green" will present their wares and information in an area within the library that evening, giving people an opportunity to know what is available locally that will make a difference in our global environmental impact. Draft Comprehensive Plan & Proposed Zoning Code Public Meetings Scheduled

The draft Comprehensive Plan and proposed zoning code changes have been developed.  This is a culmination of two years of hard work, which includes responses from a Village-wide survey, five public meetings, five focus group sessions, and input from the Comprehensive Plan Committee, Zoning Sub-Committee, and the Village’s consultants.  There are Two Scheduled Public Meetings, an Open House on November 29, 2007 and a Public Presentation on December 3, 2007 at Ossining Public Library at 7:30p.m. - 9:30 pm.  Please COME to the OPEN HOUSE to get your specific questions answered about the draft Comprehensive Plan and proposed Zoning Code changes and/or COME to the PUBLIC PRESENTATION that will present an overview of the draft Plan and the proposed Zoning Code changes.    Be a Part of Ossining’s Future!  For more information please contact the Village of Ossining Department of Planning at 762-6232 or email.

55 Alive Safe Driving Course will be offered at the library on Wednesday, November 28 and Thursday, November 29. Course fee is $10.00 for each participant( check or money order made payable to AARP and sent to the instructor) and both sessions must be attended in order to receive insurance credit. The time is 9:00 a.m.-1:15 p.m. each day. Neville Horne is the course instructor.  Participants must be at least 50 years old. Enrollment is limited. Application forms  are available throughout the library.

 

The Ossining Farmers Market is open  The market runs each Saturday through December 15th from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Located at Market Square corner of Main and Spring St.  Come to the market to buy farm fresh foods from the Hudson Valley.  Shop for vegetables, fruit, organic produce, pasture raised meats, and specialty foods.  The market is sponsored by the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce.  For further information go to the website. Please note: Shoppers should not park behind the Chase Bank next to the market. Alice B. Fogel a graduate of OHS has a new book, “Be That Empty”, coming out this month.  The author is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship and other awards, and has been nominated for Pushcart Prizes for each of the past three years.  Recent poems appear in the anthology, “Bedside Guide To No Tell Motel”, and in “Southern Poetry Review”, “The Ohio Journal”, “The Massachusetts Review”, and others.  Additionally, in the past the author’s poems have been included in “Best America Poetry” and former poet laureate Robert Hass's “Poet's Choice”.  For additional information on her publications and teaching history, go to the website.
