Ossining Fire Department Receives Grant for Life-saving Equipment The Ossining Fire Department (lead by Chief Fred Steneck and Assistant Chiefs Thomas Reddy and Pete Connolly) is the recipient of a grant for 63 personal rescue harnesses. GLN Worldwide Ltd. partnered with Firemen’s Fund Insurance Company awarded a $10,743 grant to the Ossining Fire Department for 63 personal rescue harnesses. The grant check was presented to the Ossining Fire Department at the Ossining Village Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 15th. On behalf of the Village of Ossining, we thank GLN Worldwide Ltd. and the Firemen’s Fund Insurance for their generosity. And a special thank you to all the members of the Ossining Fire Department who volunteer their services, each day, every day, protecting the lives and property of Ossining residents.

Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion Real Woman Have Curves
The fifth offering of the Maryknoll International Film Festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be shown on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll SocietyCenter, 55 Ryder Rd., in Ossining, N.Y. The series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: God’s Self-sacrificing Love Revealed in Relationships, continues with Real Women Have Curves, a 2002 U.S. film from director Patricia Cardozo. Each film will be introduced by a Maryknoll missioner who will facilitate a brief discussion following the screening. For a listing of all films in the series visit the website. All are welcome. The Community Martin Luther King Service; "Beyond Tolerance: Finding Harmony in Diversity" will be at Star of Bethlehem Church on Monday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m.Featuring Student Speakers, ACLU Director of Racial Justice Program and Ossining resident Dennis Parker, the Ossining High School “Gimme the Mic” singers and the Briarcliff High School Chorus the Scriptures, Prayers and Music of all our Traditions, and Desserts! First Half 2008 Village taxes are due January 31st. Village property taxes are collected by the Village of Ossining Finance Department. Tax Payments should be made payable to the “Village of Ossining” and mailed to: The Village of Ossining, Finance Department 2nd Floor, 16 Croton Avenue, Ossining, NY 10562. If you would like to pay your taxes in person the Village Finance Department regular office hours are Monday through Friday 9 – 4:30 p.m.; there will be extended office hours beginning Monday, January 28th thru Thursday, January 31st, during this time the office will open at 8:00 am and will close at 6:00 pm. The office will also be open on Saturday January 26, 2008 from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm. If you would like to pay your taxes online go to the village’s website, click on the link on the nav bar located on the left side and follow the instructions. To access your property, you will need information found on the property tax bill. It’s Time to Make a Difference…our families need volunteers! You are invited to take part in a meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity helping children cope with the loss of someone special to them. The Caring Circle of Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam is offering a series of workshops that will teach up-to-date skills to identify phases in the grieving process, learning how to assist those who are grieving, learning how to facilitate support groups for children, teens and adults, specialized training for perinatal support groups, and expanding your communication skills and learning essential supportive skills. OPL Event…
"Great Music" our traditional January Jazz will happen on Sunday, January 27th when The Valerie Capers Jazz Ensemble will take center stage in the theater at OPL beginning at 3:00 p.m. The ensemble, which last performed with the library series in 2003, will play the music of Ellington, Porter, Bernstein, Gershwin and Jobin. We welcome back the incomparable, Valerie Capers on piano, Alan Givens on sax & flute, Mark Marino on the guitar, John Robinson on bass and Earl Williams on drums. Concert is free. Come early for best seats.
Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce Meeting Notice, Monday, January 28th at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, 95 Broadway. Networking starts at 7 p.m., meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. The program will be “A conversation with Linda Cooper,” Ossining Village Manager and former Supervisor of the Town of Yorktown. Ms. Cooper became the Village Manager on October 1, 2007 and has graciously agreed to be our guest speaker. She will be talking about managing a municipality, upcoming projects and inter-municipal sharing of services. Bring your questions. Hear the answers. Moderated by Jerry Gershner, President.

More OPL Events…
-The Sunday Photogroup will open its new exhibit "Opus 11" at the library on February 2. The show runs through Feb. 28 and the opening reception is on Sunday, February 10th from 2-4 p.m. The exhibit is on the lower level and may be seen during regular library hours.
-The library will be sponsoring a Special Mid-Winter book sale of Children's books and non-book items (videos, games etc.) on Saturday, February 2 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. and Sunday, February 3rd from 12 noon - 4 p.m. The sale will take place in the Children's Program Room on the main level. The sale will only consist of material for children.
-Meet Neal Rechtman, author of the new book "The 28th Amendment" on Tuesday, February 5th at 7:30 p.m. Neal will be in the Board Room to discuss his timely and compelling political thriller that explores the very real potential for conflict between entertainment and politics in a media-defined age.
-AARP Tax Assistance will begin on Thursday, February 7th and continue on Thursdays through April 10th at the library. Time & Place: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The IRS trained & certified volunteers will be in the theater on the lower level. Those wishing to have their taxes prepared by the AARP volunteers must bring with them all necessary papers including a copy of last year's return.
-On Thursday, February 7th Teddy Leveille will be at the library to lead a 2 hour "Hand Beading Jewelry Workshop" starting at 7 p.m. Learn to bead a double strand necklace with metallic seed beads, Czech glass beads and with a sterling silver clasp. There is a material fee for the workshop. The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Call 941-2416 ext. 326 to register.
-In recognition of Black History Month, a special program featuring speaker Dr. Frederick Opie will be given on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:30 p.m. The program titled "The Beans and Green of Necessity: African-Americans and the Great Depression" is co-sponsored with the Ossining Historical Society Museum.

The Great Duck Race of Ossining scheduled for May 17, 2008. Festivities begin at 2:00 p.m. Race begins at 3:00 p.m. Many ducks have been sold already so make sure you get yours A.S.A.P. Think of what a cute gift they make; Valentine's day is coming, buy Duck Certificates for your sweetheart, kids, co-workers, associates …save the calories of candy while helping many great causes in the Ossining community as well as assisting others in different parts of the world. There will only be 2,500 ducks not one more this year. There will be lots of exciting things happening the day of the race, people will be milling in the streets, some shops will be celebrating with us, don't be surprised if you see giant ducks strolling through the community.
