Ossining Public Library Events
-The library will present an evening of student films on Friday, January 11th @ 7 p.m. in the theater. This program will include a series of animations created by 4th graders at the Ossining Children's Center and short documentaries made by Ossining High school students in collaboration with other Westchester County high school students. The films were created in two of the student film programs sponsored by the Jacob Burns film Center. Katie Braun, a JBFC Education Associate will introduce the student works. Free.

Warning…Jury Duty Scam The phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for your arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up, the caller says he'll need some information for "verification purposes"-your birth date, social security number, maybe even a credit card number. This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a scam. As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone; they generally correspond with prospective jurors via mail. The scam's bold simplicity may be what makes it so effective. With enough information, scammers can assume your identity and empty your bank accounts. The federal court system has issued a warning regarding the scam and urged people to call their local District Court office if they receive suspicious calls. The jury scam is a simple variation of the identity-theft ploys that have proliferated in recent years as personal information and good credit have become thieves' preferred prey, particularly on the Internet. Scammers might tap your information to make a purchase on your credit card, but could just as easily sell your information to the highest bidder on the Internet's black market. Protecting yourself is the key; never give out personal information when you receive an unsolicited phone call.

Marking the 40th anniversary year of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Maryknoll Speakers Series presents author of No Turning Back: My Summer with Daddy King At the height of the civil rights movement in 1961, Gurdon Brewster, a young white seminary student from the North, spent a life-changing summer in Atlanta living and working alongside Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr., popularly known as “Daddy” King. He will tell of his experiences at the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Center in Ossining on Jan. 16, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Brewster, now an Episcopal priest and retired chaplain at Cornell University, will speak of the transformative faith of the King family, how it changed his understanding of the Gospel, and why it is necessary today to remember the spirit and message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 40 years after his death. “I saw the world with new eyes,” he writes. Those were the eyes of the King family and “the countless others who cried out for freedom now…whose transcendent vision of hope drove them forward.” Brewster was already committed to civil rights and racial reconciliation, but naïve about the tensions in the South. This was his first encounter with the cruelty of segregation and racism. He calls his first weeks a “baptism by fire” that included a frightening encounter with KKK members and working with black youth who could not join him at a soda fountain or swim in the whites-only pool. Brewster also will speak about the vibrant worship of the people at Ebenezer Baptist Church, and how the contrast between that and his Episcopalian upbringing turned him into an Episcopal priest “with Baptist flair.” All are welcome. Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion Real Woman Have Curves
The fifth offering of the Maryknoll International Film Festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be shown on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll Society Center, 55 Ryder Rd., in Ossining, N.Y. The series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: God’s Self-sacrificing Love Revealed in Relationships, continues with Real Women Have Curves, a 2002 U.S. film from director Patricia Cardozo. Each film will be introduced by a Maryknoll missioner who will facilitate a brief discussion following the screening. For a listing of all films in the series visit the website. All are welcome. It’s Time to Make a Difference…our families need volunteers! You are invited to take part in a meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity helping children cope with the loss of someone special to them. The Caring Circle of Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam is offering a series of workshops that will teach up-to-date skills in identify phases in the grieving process, learning how to assist those who are grieving, learning how to facilitate support groups for children, teens and adults, specialized training for perinatal support groups, and expanding your communication skills and learning essential supportive skills. OPL Event…
"Great Music" our traditional January Jazz will happen on Sunday, January 27th when The Valerie Capers Jazz Ensemble will take center stage in the theater at OPL beginning at 3:00 p.m. The ensemble, which last performed with the library series in 2003, will play the music of Ellington, Porter, Bernstein, Gershwin and Jobin. We welcome back the incomparable, Valerie Capers on piano, Alan Givens on sax & flute, Mark Marino on the guitar, John Robinson on bass and Earl Williams on drums. Concert is free. Come early for best seats.
St. Augustine School 2008-2009 School Year Open House Sunday, January 27th, 2008Mass at 10:00 a.m. and Open House from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be hosted by St. Augustine Home and School Association. Teachers will be available in each classroom to discuss their curriculum and programs. St. Augustine school parents and students will be available to answer questions and provide tours. On Monday and Tuesday: January 28th and January 29th, 2008 there will be School Visitation / Open House from 9:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Visitors are welcome to see the campus and students in action, visit classrooms, the library, computer room, music room, cafeteria, gym, etc. St. Augustine School offers Pre-Kindergarten and Elementary School from Kindergarten through Eighth grade. The library will be sponsoring a Special Mid-Winter book sale of Children's books and non-book items (videos, games etc.) on Saturday, February 2 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. and Sunday, February 3rd from 12 noon - 4 p.m. The sale will take place in the Children's Program Room on the main level. The sale will only consist of material for children.
AARP Tax Assistance will begin on Thursday, February 7th and continue on Thursdays through April 10th at the library. Time & Place: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the theater. Those wishing to have their taxes prepared by the AARP volunteers must bring with them all necessary papers including a copy of last year's return.
