Congratulations to the officers and members of the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps (OVAC) on their receipt of the 2007 Westchester Emergency Services Agency of the Year Award.  Ossiningis fortunate to have such a fine organization providing our residents with this essential service; on behalf of Village residents we thank all of the members of OVAC for their continued service to our community.

 

Greater Ossining Television (GO-TV), your local public access TV station, is conducting a survey to determine how we can better serve the local community.  Copies of the survey are available in the Library, The Joseph G. Caputo Community Center or in the Village Manager’s Office at 16 Croton Avenue.  Please take the time to complete the very brief questionnaire so that GOTV may be better able to serve the community.

 

OHS Raymond Hughes Scholarship – Help Wanted A volunteer is needed to help expand the scholarship committee’s scope in the development of donors.  The committee is looking for someone who can visit the high school, review the Wizards on file, and take off the names of the class officers from 1946 through 1970 so they can be contacted to request their help in soliciting, through their classes, additional donations for the Raymond Hughes Scholarship.  If interested, contact Tom Schoonmaker, OHS '51, via email or tel. Mike Risko Music School Rock and Jazz Band Showcases on July 27 at Ryder Park and August 24 at Market Square, both at 7 p.m. bring the whole family and a picnic dinner to this showcase of original music. It is open to the public and it is free. Special performances by Mike and Miriam Risko and other music school staff. We will be holding a fundraiser within the event to benefit the Ossining Microfund. For more information check the website
 

The Ossining Public Library invites all our residents to a retrospective exhibit of work by artists William Carson Francis and his son William Corning Francis from July 6-27.  The exhibit will be in the Lower level and may be seen during regular summer library hours...Mon-Thur 9-9, Fri 9-5:30 Sat. 9-1 Library is closed Sunday. The Francis family lived on Upper Croton Avenue from 1925 - 2006. In 2006, son, Bill died in a house fire.  Painting by both were found in a studio on the property and have been restored. Several of the paintings are of Ossining and environs. The elder Wm. Francis painted murals in OHS.

ABCs of Jazz at St. Paul's-on-the-Hill, Saturday, July 28, 7 p.m. & 8:45 p.m. at St. Paul's-on-the-Hill, 40 Ganung Drive, OssiningThe season's final Jazz-on-the-Hill concert features Art Hightower, drummer and group leader; Bill Conway, bassist; and Carl Viggiani, pianist—the ABCs of Jazz.   Admission: Adults--$20, Students with college ID--$10, Students under 18--$6.  After a distinguished career in the Army, Art Hightower returned to his first love, music and drums. He has performed with many well-known groups over the past two decades, among them A Few Bad Apples, Jazz Connection and Counterpoint.   Drummer for the 2002-03 national tour of "Ain't Misbehavin," Art lives in Peekskill.  Bill Conway, of Somers, bassist and arranger, has performed with song stylists Sylvia Syms and Margaret Whiting, and jazz greats as Benny Carter and :"Doc" Cheatham.  In '80s his band "Swing Express," was hailed by the New York Times jazz critic John Wilson.  Jazz and classical pianist Carl Viggiani trained at the New England Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music and later studied with Harold Danko.  Viggiani frequently performs throughout the New York area as a soloist and accompanist.  St. Paul's is known locally for its excellent acoustics. Ossining Firefighters’ Parade will be held on August 3rd Step off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Croton and Calam Avenue.  Be sure to come to watch the parade and support our hundreds of volunteers!

The Ossining Public Library invites you to "An Evening of Conversation" with best-selling author, James Patterson at the Ossining Public Library, 53 Croton Avenue. Join us in the theater on Tuesday, August 7th, 2007 @ 7:30 p.m. Patterson is the author of the "Alex Cross" novels and the "Women's Murder Club" series. He has written "Honeymoon", "Lifeguard" and soon to be published “You've Been Warned." Patterson is a summer resident of Scarborough.

 

Special Benefit Concert to be held on September 8th, 2007 from 2-4 p.m. in the theater at OssiningPublic Library. Seniors Oliva Oppedisano and members of High Voltage: Max Gulian, Lee Saper, Jesse McCormick, Scott Peller and Jake Schofield, will perform at a gala fund-raising event to raise money for the scholarship fund in the name of Noah Woodley -Aitchison. This scholarship is awarded at OHS seniors at the end of their senior year. This concert will raise money for the fund and help those awarded with their educational expenses. Singer/songwriter Fred Gillen, Jr. will be master of ceremonies for this special Saturday afternoon concert.

The Ossining High School class of 1952 in conjunction with the Ossining Public Library has invited Douglas Parker, a 1952 alum to speak at the library on Saturday, September 15th @ 2:00 p.m.about his  biography on Ogden Nash titled: "Ogden Nash: The Life and Work of America's Laureate of Light Verse." Doug's talk will describe his experience in writing the book, published in 2005, recount some of the highlights of Nash's life including stints as a Hollywood screenwriter, lyricist on and off Broadway and performer on radio and TV, and he will read excerpts from some of Nash's most provocative and entertaining verse. The talk will take place in the theater on the lower level.

The Ossining Farmers Market is open  The market runs each Saturday through December 15th from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Located at Market Square corner of Main and Spring St.  Come to the market to buy farm fresh foods from the Hudson Valley.  Shop for vegetables, fruit, organic produce, pasture raised meats, and specialty foods.  The market is sponsored by the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce.  For further information go to the website.

 

Call for Artists: We are in the planning stages for our second Ossining Arts Festival to be held on Sunday, Sept 16. Display space for artists is available at a minimum charge. Please call Catherine Borgia at 262-8873 if you would like more information.

Town Crier Committee…The Village of Ossining is exploring the idea of creating a Town Crier Committee and is seeking volunteers to serve on same.  This committee would reach out to the people of Ossining, connecting our diverse population personally through various creative avenues and meetings and would also serve as a sounding board to the trustees.  Anyone interested in serving on this committee should send a letter of interest to the Ossining Village Manager’s Office, 16 Croton Avenue, Ossining.
