Ossining's Landmark Structures
Local Landmark designation and National Register designation are two distinct programs to preserve the unique architectural and cultural heritage of a community. The programs are differentiated by the fact that one is local (municipal), and the other is federal. [1]
LOCALLY LANDMARKED PROPERTIES
Properties in this category receive local landmark designation by ordinance of the Village Board of Trustees.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES: INDIVIDUAL AND DISTRICT LISTING
The National Park Service designates properties in this category. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Properties listed in the National Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture. These historic places can be significant at the national, state, or local levels. The National Register was created through the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and is maintained by the National Park Service.
