Honorary Street Naming
An honorary street designation honors current and former residents of the Village of Ossining who have contributed to the Village through accomplishments during the honoree's lifetime.
Honorary street signs are placed above the primary street sign. The postal addresses for honorary streets remain the primary name of the road. According to the Ossining Post Office-Postmaster, correspondence should be addressed using the primary street name. However, mail can be addressed to honorary streets identified as "renamed" (Sonny Sharrock Way and Peter Falk Place).
Application Process
The Village of Ossining Board of Trustees (BOT) set forth a policy to allow for the honorary naming of streets in the Village. There are multiple steps to the application process, including:
Step 1: Fully complete and sign the application. The application should include a detailed account of the honoree's life, an explanation of the honoree's connection with the proposed street, contributions to the Village, and residency length in the Village.
Step 2: Application is filed with the Office of the Village Manager
Step 3: If the application meets the necessary criteria, a resolution is presented to the BOT to acknowledge the request and be referred to the Village Historian.
Step 4: The Village Historian researches the honoree's contributions and connection to the proposed street.
Step 5: The Village Historian presents findings to the BOT within forty-five (45) days of the referral.
Step 6: The BOT schedules a public hearing, at which time the public will be allowed to address the Board on the proposed honorary street naming. The public is permitted to submit written comments.
Step 7: Following the public hearing, the BOT votes on approving/denying the application.
