Ossining Youth Council FAQ

What is the Ossining Youth Council?

The Ossining Youth Council (OYC) is a community-supported, youth-led leadership program to promote a youth voice in Ossining. Those on this committee serve in an advisory capacity to the Ossining Youth Bureau (OYB). The OYC will lead the development and initiation of programs and activities while advocating for their peers in the community.

What is the difference between the Ossining Youth Council and the Youth Advisory Board?

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is an advisory board with representatives from the Village Board of Trustees, appointed adults that live in the Village of Ossining, and three (3) Youth Council Members (ages 16-21). The OYC is comprised of ONLY youth. OYC members advise, advocate, promote, and participate in various programs created or offered through the OYB.

What is expected of a member of the Ossining Youth Council?

Members of the OYC are expected to make a  twelve (12) month commitment of service to the Council. Along with that comes the expectations of:

YES, it’s that simple!

What is the time commitment of Ossining Youth Council members?

There will be full council meetings monthly and other meetings, committees, or activities where OYC members can participate. Since we are just starting, the minimum time commitment is three (3) hours a month. As the Council develops and creates standards, this may slightly increase. Being an active participant in the OYC will give you a voice in further developing this expectation.

What are some examples of what I will be doing as an Ossining Youth Council Member?

Consider the OYC to be similar to the Student Council in school. OYC members have many opportunities to support the Council, other youth, and the community. You will be a representative and voice for the youth of Ossining. As the Council forms, you will be giving guidance on youth programs and services needed in the community. Over the next year, the structure of meetings will be developed, and officers will be nominated and voted on. Community service is a natural part of being part of the OYC. Joining with other OYC members in programs or promoting programs will help you feel strongly about your role.
