Village & Town Information
Helpful Information from New York State
The Village of Ossining is committed to sharing up-to-date and relevant information regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic. In our weekly web blasts you will find this section dedicated to new information. For previously shared information, please visit the Village of Ossining's dedicated Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) page.
New York-based startup Codecademy has provided technical training to 1,500 state personnel on the frontlines of the State's pandemic response as part of the COVID-19 Technology SWAT Team. Through this pro-bono partnership, Codecademy is providing six-month training licenses to NYS' Office of Information Technology Services. Leading tech companies from around the country have participated in the Tech SWAT Team Initiative, saving taxpayers over $14 million.

The DMV is expanding New Yorkers' ability to complete certain transactions through secure drop boxes. New Yorkers can use drop boxes for services including license plate surrenders, address changes, and license and registration renewals. Customers using drop boxes must wear face coverings and maintain social distancing at all times. Drop boxes are located at all state-run DMV offices and are available during regular office hours Monday-Saturday. Learn more here.

During the pandemic, the New York Department of Labor has prevented more than $1 billion in unemployment insurance fraud. The Department of Labor has stopped more than 40,000 fraudulent claims since March. During the last five months, DOL has referred more UI fraud cases to federal prosecutors than in the last ten years combined.

New York City museums and cultural institutions can reopen starting Monday, August 24. Museums, aquariums, and other low-risk indoor arts and cultural institutions can open at 25% capacity. Timed ticketing will be required with pre-set, staggered entry, along with strict enforcement of face coverings, social distancing, controlled traffic flow to avoid crowding, and enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols.

Bowling alleys throughout New York are allowed to reopen with strict safety protocols. Bowling alleys will be able to operate at a 50 percent occupancy, and face coverings and social distancing will be required at all times. Every other lane must be closed and patrons need to stay with the party at their assigned lane. Additionally, thorough cleaning and disinfection of shared or rented equipment between each use will be required. Read more here.

New York will dispatch mobile testing teams to farms in rural counties across New York. The State's contact tracing program has identified several new clusters at farms linked to seasonal workers. In addition to sending mobile testing teams, the Department of Health and Department of Agriculture & Markets will help provide housing for farm workers who test positive and need to be isolated.

So far, PSAs from New York's Mask Up America campaign have aired on over 23,000 TV spots on stations across the country, and been watched over 10 million times. The latest PSA in the series features the voice of Paul Rudd encouraging Americans to wear a mask so we can all return to doing the things we love. Watch it here.

The state has suspended liquor licenses for 16 additional bars in New York State as of Monday, 8/17. After finding egregious violations of pandemic-related Executive Orders, 148 liquor licenses so far have been suspended during the Coronavirus pandemic. Governor Cuomo wants to remind all New Yorkers that outdoor dining does not mean outdoor drinking or partying. We are still in the middle of a pandemic.
If you are in a dangerous domestic situation, New York State will help you find safe shelter. You aren't trapped because of COVID. If there is an issue where you face imminent harm, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you need help, you can call the State's Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-942-6906, or text 844-997-2121.

The deadline for health insurance special enrollment has been extended to September 15, 2020. New Yorkers without health insurance can apply for coverage through the NY State of Health Plan Marketplace.

Alaska and Delaware have been added to the State's travel advisory. Individuals who travel to New York from states on the travel advisory, which all have significant community spread, must quarantine for 14 days. No states have been removed. See the full list of states and territories subject to the travel advisory here.

Guidance has been released for gym reopening. The exhaustive list of health protocols mandated by the state (and enforced by localities) can be viewed here.

Restaurants and bars can continue to sell takeout beer, wine and cocktails through September 4, 2020. Any alcohol purchased for takeout or delivery must be accompanied by food. Additionally, restaurants and bars can serve alcohol in expanded outdoor seating (when accompanied by food). Governor Cuomo wants to remind all New Yorkers to drink responsibly and to follow health protocols. Any establishments found violating these rules set by the State Liquor Authority risk losing their liquor license.

Governor Cuomo urges all New Yorkers to get flu shots. While we still handle COVID, flu season looms on the horizon. The State Department of Health issue letters to local health departments requiring them to submit plans as to how they will handle testing for flu and COVID. This year it is especially important that New Yorkers get their flu shot. Find a flu vaccine site near you.

The moratorium for residential and commercial evictions in New York City has been extended to October 1st. Evictions will remain paused for New Yorkers and small businesses facing financial hardship due to the pandemic.
Volunteer New York’s program to connect small business owners to trained volunteer professionals who can provide PPP help is now back online. Unlike other opportunities on their website, this one is specifically for small business owners who want to receive consultations.

What can you do?
As many of you know, our local food pantries and non-profits have been coming together to ensure our community does not go hungry. We can’t thank these organizations enough for all their help. Below you will find links to our local non-profits that have been working in partnership with the Village of Ossining to distribute food to people who need it. If you would like to provide donations or volunteer support we encourage you to do so*.

These efforts will continue through this COVID-19 pandemic and thereafter. We are proud to say that many of our local restaurants are also taking donations toward providing meals to those in the community that cannot leave their homes. We will be including this information in a section of our Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) web page.

Please send emails to webblast@villageofossining.org if you know of any other Ossining based agencies that are providing food during this time so that we can add them to this list.

We appreciate your commitment to our community.
Tri-State Mask Makers are creating masks for those in need - healthcare workers to neighbors in nursing home.

Your donation will allow many sewists to continue with their work of love.
The Ossining Micro Fund is a non-profit organization offering interest-free loans to individuals and families who encounter unexpected financial obstacles. Our philosophy is to “pay it forward” – when a loan recipient repays a loan, the money becomes available to help another person in need. Click here for information .
