New York is pushing forward to conduct more tests, add hospital beds and make it easier to get the COVID-19 vaccine across the State, but we need New Yorkers to stay vigilant and take safety precautions as the virus is still spreading. Washing hands, wearing masks and social distancing are vital tools New Yorkers must use to stop the spread. We're moving through a difficult period in our history, and COVID fatigue has set in, and New Yorkers crave normalcy, but we will get through this together and come out on the other side.
NYS wants to get shots in arms as fast as possible, but our biggest constraint at the moment is the limited vaccine supply from the federal government. NYS’s distribution network is up and running and working on expanding it every day—but can only vaccinate as many New Yorkers as they have supply for. There are around 7 million New Yorkers who are eligible for the vaccine. Still, New York only receives 300,000 doses per week, and this and next week’s allocation from the federal government will be even less: just 250,000 doses. Due to this limited allocation, appointments have filled up quickly, which NYS recognizes is frustrating for so many New Yorkers who want to get the vaccine as soon as they can. If you are currently eligible for the vaccine, Governor Cuomo urges you to call your local health department, pharmacy, doctor, or hospital for additional information and schedule appointments.
New Yorkers can track the State's vaccination progress through the COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker. The dashboard provides updates on the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, including the number of doses received by the State, a breakdown of first and second doses, and the number of people who have received first and second doses in each region. When supply increases, we are ready to get shots into arms. Until then, patience is difficult but required. Wear a mask, socially distance, and stop the spread.
New York State and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital launched a new vaccination site for eligible New Yorkers in Washington Heights. This new site, at Fort Washington Armory in Upper Manhattan, was made possible thanks to a partnership with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The site offers vaccinations to New Yorkers age 65 and up and appointments can be scheduled online through the NewYork-Presbyterian Connect Online Patient Portal. Appointments are required.
New State-run vaccination sites opened across New York State. Last week, the first vaccinations began at a drive-thru vaccination site at Jones Beach on Long Island. Vaccination sites at SUNY Stony Brook, the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Buffalo, and Plattsburgh International Airport are open and vaccinating eligible New Yorkers against the COVID-19 virus. Vaccinations are by appointment only. To determine eligibility and schedule an appointment to receive their first dose, New Yorkers can use the " Am I Eligible" app or call the New York State Vaccination Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4VAX (1-833-697-4829). Appointments to receive a second dose will be scheduled in-person immediately after an individual receives the first dose. New Yorkers should not attempt to book their second appointment online.
The first "community vaccination kits" were deployed to New York City Housing Authority and churches and cultural institutions in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester locations. The State has assembled community vaccination kits to ensure that residents of under-served areas have equal access to the vaccine. The kits include workstation equipment, medical supplies, room dividers, privacy curtains, and more.
The pace of vaccination is rapidly accelerating. If the Federal Government can increase supply, NYS is ready to inoculate New Yorkers and scale up the vaccine distribution. These pop-up sites also serve our mission to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine to low-income communities and leave no New Yorkers behind.
Governor Cuomo has asked Pfizer if New York can directly purchase vaccine doses from them. Since Pfizer is not bound to commitments that are a part of Operation Warp Speed, he has asked Pfizer, a New York-based company, if they will sell vaccine doses directly to New York State. Read the letter here.
Governor Cuomo has issued a letter demanding the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar explain his false claim that vaccine doses in reserve would be shipped to states. In case you missed it, last week, the Federal Government told not just New York but all fifty states that vaccine doses that had been "held in physical reserve" would be shipped to states. This came as welcome news, as the federal supply of the vaccine is extremely limited. But it turned out that this was false. These doses had already been distributed to the states. Whether this was an act of incompetence or an act of intentional falsehood, New York and the public deserve a full accounting.
As part of Governor Cuomo’s 2021 State of the State, an additional $25 million will continue the Nourish NY Initiative. 2020 was a painful year for many New Yorkers, but the Nourish NY program ensured that no food was going to waste at a time when people are hungry. The Program redirected 17 million pounds of food from local farms to New Yorkers in need. NYS will continue to ensure all families in New York have access to healthy, locally grown food.
Governor Cuomo announced a new proposal to help small businesses impacted by COVID as part of his Fiscal Year 2022 Executive Budget. The Pandemic Recovery and Restart Program is a $130 million proposal to help small businesses most impacted by COVID recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Program would establish three new tax credits and expand a fourth tax credit to help small businesses, arts, theatrical industries, restaurants, and other businesses to bring back jobs and help the economy recover faster.
