Climate Change

In recognition of the numerous challenges posed by climate change, the Village is undertaking several initiatives focused on identifying steps that the community can take to address this important issue.

The Village is a member of the following organizations:

Village initiatives include:

Ossining Community Climate Action Plan

In 2010, the Planning Department and other Village departments collaborated to create an inventory of the community's greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing ICLEI's Clean Air and Climate Protection (CACP) software, the inventory cataloged the amount of Carbon Dioxide (C02), Nitrous Oxide (N20), and other pollutants emitted by municipal, residential, and business sector sources. This data served as the basis for the Ossining Community Climate Action Plan, a comprehensive document setting forth initiatives can undertake to help combat climate change on a local level. Municipal Energy Audits

In 2009, the Village received a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to conduct energy usage audits for a number of municipal buildings. The audits will be conducted by the New York Power Authority (NYPA) in 2010. Determining the energy efficiency of our buildings will facilitate the implementation of positive changes toward lowering municipal energy consumption in the future. After the completion of the audits, the Village will identify projects and steps to increase the energy efficiency of its structures.

Ossining
Green Committee

The Ossining Green Committee is a joint Town of Ossining and Village of Ossining task force consisting of members of the Town and Village Environmental Advisory Councils (EACs) as well as interested Town and Village residents. The Green Committee and the Village Planning Department collaborated on the creation of the Community Climate Action Plan in 2010. The Green Committee also organizes an annual Earth Day Fair each April as well as other environmental-related events and activities designed to raise awareness of environmental issues in Ossining.  Please click here for information on the Green Committee's ongoing events and activities.
