The Village of Ossining has declared a State of Emergency in connection with Hurricane Irene effective 7 PM Saturday August 27, 2011.  This will enable additional emergency measures as needed to respond effectively to the hurricane.

There is a hurricane watch in effect for the area, as well as a flood watch and high wind watch.  Based on current information, this could be a serious storm, and it is expected to enter the region at approximately 8 pm this evening, with possible hurricane conditions into Sunday afternoon.  Residents are urged to take steps to prepare for the storm, and additional information may be found on the County of Westchester website on emergency preparedness:


During the storm, residents are urged:

Stay off the roads-After 6 pm Saturday, driving should be restricted to emergency only;

Avoid standing and moving water ;

Do not drive around barricades placed on roads or otherwise;

Avoid downed wires;

Do not enter a flooded basement until the electricity has been turned off.

Residents with special medical needs requiring electrical equipment are urged to make plans now to assure their care, or if assistance is needed, call the Village of Ossining Police Department at 941-5700 by 3 pm today.   

The Ossining Community Center will be opened as an emergency shelter if needed; inquiries may be directed to the Police Department at 941-5700.
