What Middle School Parents Need to Know About Their Teens

Never underestimate the influence of a parent, especially when their kids are teenagers. The research shows that most teens will make good choices due to the positive influences of their parents. It is important for parents to stay engaged with their kids even though it can be challenging at times. As kids enter middle school their focus moves more to their peers and less on their family life, which is a normal part of their development. That new focus on peers comes with unique challenges and choices that teens must make independently. That is why Ossining Communities That Care is pleased to be offering a Parent Education program targeted specifically to Middle School parents.

Next Thursday February 10th at AMD Middle School, Angela Marciano, the AMD Student Assistance Counselor will offer the program “What Your Middle School Teen Won’t Tell You But You Need To Know.”  The program will take place in the AMD Cafetorium on Thursday, February 10th, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm. Ms. Marciano will speak about key issues related to teen development specifically targeted at middle school parents.  Ms. Marciano states, “Come and learn how to safeguard your child and encourage them to make healthy choices even while they are sometimes being given the opposite message by their peers, the media and other pop culture influences.”  Ossining Communities That Care (OCTC) funds its parent education events with federal and local grants.  OCTC is a coalition of many organizations and individuals in Ossining committed to strengthening the community on behalf of youth and families. It is a goal of OCTC to ensure that all of our young people grow up to become healthy and successful adults by guiding them away from engaging in high-risk behaviors.
