Saturday June 12th is the 30th Annual Ossining Village Fair from 10:00am to 5:00pm (rain date June 13) in Ossining's beautiful historic downtown area. There will be 3-stages of music and entertainment, kids rides, and returning for the 2nd year-"Ossining Star Search". This is our largest Fair with over 200 vendor booths filled with great merchandise, local information and delicious food!    The popular WHUD radio station will be at the top of Main Street for part of the day.  The 30th Annual Ossining Village Fair is presented by the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by TD Bank and Verizon, with support from the Village of Ossining, PAL, Ossining Open Door Family Medical Center, Dravot Carnehan Studios, WHUD, The Hudson Independent Newspaper, Magical Memories Entertainment and The Melting Pot Restaurant.

 

 

Living Sculpture:  June 12th from 10 – 5   Come Be A Living Sculpture!  One to three people will be photographed striking a pose for five minutes.  Where?  Between Main and Maple Street on The Aqueduct Path Above Con Edison and the Farmer’s Market.    Make up your own costume and idea.  Historic, family, comedy, sport, horror, politics, actors, anything you can think of (in good taste), etc.  Each participant will be photographed and appear on Ossining the Ossining e-blast with the names of those who win a trophy.  Sponsored by the Ossining Parks and Recreation Department, Chamber of Commerce and the Ossining Arts Council. 

 

 

Holy Ossining!  A Tour of the Sacred Spaces and Peaceful Places of the Village Of Ossining will take place on Saturday, June 12, 2010 and Saturday, June 19th at 12:30 PM.  This FREE and unique tour program showcases the diversity of the community of faith in the Village of Ossining and surrounding areas.  The tour will be conducted by knowledgeable docents who intimately know the history, lore, legends and architecture of their church buildings. 

Tour I Saturday, June 12th: Begins at 12:30 PM at the Ossining Savings Bank Building, Route 9 & Main Street.  Visits include:  First Baptist, First Presbyterian, Ossining Methodist and Trinity Methodist

Tour II Saturday, June 19th: Begins at 12:30 PM at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, 95 Broadway.  Visits include:  Star of Bethlehem, Trinidad DeDios, Dominican Sisters of Hope Chapel, Campwoods Grounds, St. Paul’s on the Hill, Calvary Baptist.

Join friends on the courtyard lawn of Trinity Episcopal Church for their annual Strawberry Festival and Tag Sale, Saturday, June 12thBeginning at 11:00 am they will be offering hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry shortcake and beverages outside in the shade and inside Potter Hall will have all manner of things for sale.  Visit the Village Fair, have lunch downtown, then come up the hill for dessert and treasure hunting.  We will have small furniture items, linens, knick-knacks, holiday items, books, artwork etc.  The Tag Sale hours are 11:00 – 4:00 and they will serve strawberries until they are gone!   For more information visit their website at www.trinityossining.org or call 941-0806.

 

 

BOOK SALE:  The Library Associates, the volunteer friends group of the Ossining Public Library, will sponsor a book sale Saturday as part of the Village Fair. A broad range of gently used books – including bestsellers, cookbooks and children’s classics, old and new – will be priced from 50 cents to $2. Ah, the Art of Watercolor!  It can be wet and wild, bursting with brilliance or opaque and gentle as a summer’s breeze.  Dab up some color, build up the layers.  Let the color and glow wash over you as you get ready for the Ossining Arts Council’s newest show ~ the Art of Watercolor.  The Ossining Arts Council, in cooperation with the ArtBarn, is pleased to present our latest exhibit - "Art of Watercolor" at the artbarn 211 N.  Highland Avenue (Rt. 9) Ossining.  Opening Reception: Saturday, June 12 from 2-5PM. Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-6PM. CLOSED Sunday and Monday.

The "Art of Watercolor" runs through July 10.  Soak up some fun at the Ossining Street Fair and then watercolors at the Artbarn.

Saturday, June 12, 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm - GOT WORMS?  ALL WELCOME. Learn about worm composting and make a worm bin to take home. Material charge - $8/wormbin.

Saturday, June 19, time TBA - CANOE THE CROTON.  ADULTS. Enjoy paddling on one of the secret gems of Westchester from tidal flats through rocky cliffs, with sightings of herons, osprey and even bald eagles. All participants must be swimmers, be prepared to get wet, demonstrate canoeing experience and carpool to the put-in site. Members $10, Non-Members $20 per person

For Information or to register for a program, call (914) 762-2912 ext 110, Tuesday – Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  Registration is required for all programs.  All programs take place in the Nature Center at Teatown Lake Reservation (1600 Spring Valley Road, Ossining NY 10562) unless otherwise noted and are free for members and $5 for nonmembers (plus materials fee, if applicable) unless otherwise noted.  When applicable, all programs must be paid for at the time of booking.  We accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover, or you can pay in person with cash or check.  No refund will be granted less than two weeks prior to the program date.  People withdrawing prior to this deadline will receive a 75% refund (less 25% administrative costs.)

 

 

Collegium Westchester Chorus and Orchestra performs music of Barber, Dvorak, and a world premiere by Matthew Mendez, on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 8 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Ossining (34 South Highland Avenue, on Route 9 opposite Ossining High School). Eric Kramer conducts, and soloists are Sunghae Anna Lim (violin), Leslie Swanson (soprano), and Brace Negron (bass-baritone). The concert will be preceded by an art show from 5 to 7 pm. Admission is free. The Ossining Public Library Is Holding it Very First Annual Meeting of the Board on Friday, June 11:  The Ossining Public Library is holding its very first Annual Meeting of the Ossining Library Community and they are thrilled to honor our staff who have been part of the OPL family for more than 15 years.  The Library Board of Trustees are honoring those staff members who have worked at OPL for 15, 20 and 25 years.  The Board of Trustees of the Ossining Public Library cordially invites you to attend the Annual Meeting of the board on Friday evening, June 11, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Camille Budarz Theatre, followed by refreshments in the Gallery.  At this event, they will celebrate the many accomplishments of the library during the past year and thank the many people who have contributed to those successes.  At that time they will formally welcome our new director, Mr. James Farrell, and honor staff members for their many years of service.  Please come and celebrate the library and its staff on Friday, June 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Budarz Theatre.  Learn what is new and exciting at the Library, meet our new Director, and hear from the Foundation and the Associates.  There will be a musical interlude and a catered reception following the program in the Gallery.  The Ossining Public Library is a School District Library chartered by the State of New York to serve all residents of the Ossining School District.  As a member of the Westchester Library System, it also provides services to a much larger community.

Celebrate An American Classic:  Join Ossining’s Mary Murphy for a conversation about her new book:  “Scout, Atticus and Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of To Kill a Mockingbird.” at the Ossining Public Library, Wednesday, June 16, 7:30 pm. Murphy also will show excerpts from her forthcoming documentary about Harper Lee’s first and only novel and why Oprah Winfrey calls it “our national novel.” Books will be available for sale and signing. The Ossining Farmers Market has re-opened at Market Square! This year, Community Markets is happy to welcome additional vendors to the market, which will run every Saturday from 8:30am to1pm until December 18th on the corner of Main and Spring Street!  In addition to last season's fresh local, certified organic produce, artisinal organic breads, fish, meat, eggs, cheese, herbs, baked goods and specialty foods this year's market will feature handmade chutney, simmer sauces and other Indian delicacies from Calcutta Kitchens of Norwalk, CT., hard and soft goat cheeses, milk and yogurt from Coach Farm of Pine Plains, NY and mushrooms, orchids and vegetables from Hodgson Farm of Walden, NY.  Community Markets will also be hosting events like: cooking demos, tastings, a corn roast and live music throughout the season. The Northern Westchester Model Railroad Club, has its monthly meeting Thursday, June 17 in the community room of the Apple Bank in the Rose Hill Shopping Center in Thornwood, NY. The meeting will begin at 7:30PM and generally breaks up around 10PM. If you would like to attend, please call Hank Teller for all details at 914-309-2395.

For those with layout questions, Hank Teller does house calls, also.  The Northern Westchester Model Railroad Club meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month except in July and August. Model railroading is “Worlds Greatest Hobby.”

Phelps Hospital Auxilliary to Hold First-Ever Craft Fair - The Auxiliary at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center invites the community to attend its first-ever Craft Fair to benefit the hospital on Saturday, June 19 from 10 am to 5 pm. The event will be held rain or shine at The James House Mansion, which is located behind Phelps, 701 N. B roadway in Sleepy Hollow.  The Craft Fair will feature more than 30 vendors selling jewelry, clothing, pottery, handcrafted handbags, photography, decoupage, embroidered towels, candles and more. Admission and parking are free. Refreshments will be sold.

Established in 1955, the Phelps Auxiliary is a network of almost 350 men and women who provide volunteer services and participate in fundraising activities to help support the hospital. The Auxiliary raises approximately $150,000 every year, which helps finance capital improvements, new medical equipment and hospital programs such as Hospice education and complementary care. Among the projects managed by the Auxiliary are the Phelps Gift Shop, the Cherry Door Thrift Shop at 36 Main Street in Tarrytown, and The James House Mansion, an 1851 stone mansion with river views which is available for rental for special occasions.  For more information about the Craft Fair at Phelps Memorial Hospital or on becoming a member of the Phelps Auxiliary, call 914-366-3170.

e-News from Legislator BurtonThe Westchester County Board of Legislators celebrates LGBTQ Pride in Westchester on Monday, June 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Legislative Chambers, 148 Martine Avenue, 8th Floor, White Plains. While observing Pride Month in June, The County Board of Legislators would like to recognize and celebrate historic achievements as well as take the opportunity to recognize the impact Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning individuals have had on the world.  In proclaiming June as LGBTQ Pride Month in Westchester County, the County Board of Legislators will celebrate the outstanding contributions of organizations within the community at their second June Board meeting with a program which includes live entertainment.  This year the Board will present a special proclamation honoring the Westchester Pride Coalition, an umbrella organization of the County’s LGBTQ non-profit agencies.  Please RSVP by Thursday, June 17th to 995-4122 or RSVP@westchesterlegislators.com

Maryknoll Sisters To Host Annual Golf Classic on the Hudson The Garrison Golf Club in Garrison, NY will be the site for a Maryknoll Sisters golf outing.  Ill and elderly senior missionary Sisters at Maryknoll Sisters in Ossining who have served the poor around the world will benefit from the proceeds of the 8th Annual Golf Classic. The Golf outing, on Monday, June 21st, 2010, provides a fun day out for avid golfers and raises funds for the care of women who dedicated their lives to helping others.  After a 10:30 a.m. Sign In, the Shotgun Start kicks off at 12 noon. The Ossining Community Action Program proudly presents its’ 3rd Annual “Celebrity Chef” benefit, Ossining CAP’s premier fundraiser and cuisine tasting celebration. Through the sponsorship of community leaders and local businesses, Ossining CAP will host an afternoon with members of the community serving their favorite dishes.  Several community and civic leaders have agreed to serve as celebrity chefs. Celebrity chefs will cook their specialties to be sampled by the attendees.  This years’ benefit will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2010 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Star of Bethlehem Church, at 304 Spring Street.  Admission to the event is $25.00. This is an excellent community relations and marketing opportunity for your organization, whereby you can increase your visibility to the community.  Ossining CAP, a component of Westchester Community Opportunity Program, Inc. Re-Vote on Ossining Public Library Budget Set for June 29.  The Board of Trustees of the Ossining Public Library (OPL) has decided to hold another vote on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2010-2011 on Tuesday, June 29 from 7 AM to 9 PM. Voting will take place on the lower level of the library building.  The vote, which is open to registered residents of the Ossining School District, will be on the same proposed budget, totaling $3,822,016, turned down on May 18 by 127 votes. Residents who are not registered for general elections may register at the library for this vote.  Absentee ballots will be available at the library beginning on June 15.  The tax levy being requested in the OPL 2010-2011 budget is $3,522,016. To offset the budget total, the Board decided to transfer $250,000 from the OPL’s reserves, and use $50,000 of planned income from fines and various library services.  The tax levy, moving forward from last year’s budget, represents a 1.91% increase ($66,078) and will cost residents an additional $2.00 in taxes per capita.  The Ossining Public Library is among the busiest libraries in Westchester County. More than half of the population in the Ossining School District are library card holders (19,126 card holders out of 33,064 residents), and nearly 10,000 patrons used their card at the library within the last six months. Between July 2009 and March 2010 227,917 people visited the library, with about 20,000 people attending over 800 OPL programs offered to the public, free of charge, in that same period of time.

Ossining Community Markets Seeking Applicants for Two Positions:
-Marketing Assistant/Fill-In Site Manager

Conduct surveys at the farmers markets, post flyers, promote the markets at street fairs, assist with other marketing related efforts. Approximately 2 days per week for 3 to 7 hours a day from June to December. Fill in as a Site Manager as needed. On-call with as much notice as possible but at times with very short notice. On average Site Manager shifts are 8 hours a day. One weekend per month during the season can be blocked out as “not available” to accommodate regularly scheduled time off. The position is dual – it includes marketing assistant duties in addition to being available as an on-call, fill-in site manager. Seasonal, part-time position; days and hours vary. Season runs from May 29 to December 19. We are seeking someone with an outgoing personality and outstanding organizational skills. Vehicle required. $15/hour.

Oversee and supervise daily operations of an outdoor farmers market in Ossining. Customer relations; promote e-mail marketing list, special events and new products; enforce policies and procedures. Provide direction and diffuse conflict (if any) in a peaceful manner. Set up manager’s tent, information center, signage and barricades. Complete weekly written report on daily market activity; ability to communicate via e-mail in a timely manner. Requirements include regular internet access and lifting of up to approximately 40 pounds. Outgoing personality and knowledge of local food movement and/or interest in cooking with fresh, local ingredients helpful. Market operates every Saturday through Dec 18. This is a part time seasonal position. $15/hour.
