Westchester Bike Summit is an event that draws together planners, public officials, employers, and cyclist to discuss how to make biking and bike commuting more a part of Westchester’s transportation mix.  The event is free and will take place on Tuesday, April 7th at Westchester County Center in White Plains and runs from 3 – 8 p.m.  Register at  Call 914-217-5600 for more information. 


John Paul Rodrigues Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner and Show at the Westchester Broadway Theatre on April 8th, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.  The Scholarship is in memory of John-Paul Rodrigues, a 1998 graduate of Ossining High School and Village of Ossining sanitation worker who died on the job on July 20, 2005.  Tickets are $75.00 per person.  For reservations, or if you have any questions contact Joe Rodrigues at 941-3277 by March 14th. 


Office of African American Affairs "Blueprint for Change" Summit  will be held on April 14th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Purchase College in Purchase.  The Westchester County African American Advisory Board and the Westchester County Office of African American Affairs is presenting the Summit.  Keynote speaker will be television host Gil Noble, a well known television reporter and journalist. He is also known for his work as the host of WABC TV’s weekly public affairs series, “Like it Is.”  The Summit will also include workshops and interactive discussions on addressing disparities in health, education, housing and economic development.  For more information, contact the Office of African American Affairs (914) 995-2925.


Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion, The Motorcycle Diaries, The eighth offering of this year’s Maryknoll International Film Festival, sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, will be shown on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll Mission Center, 55 Ryder Rd., in Ossining.  The free series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: Breakdown as Opportunity for Breakthrough, continues with The Motorcycle Diaries, a 2004 multi-national film from director Walter Salles.  Each film in the series is introduced by a Maryknoll missioner who will facilitate a brief discussion following the screening. Jesse Collyer Youth Sports will kick-off on Saturday, April 18th at 9:00 a.m. with the annual Opening Day Parade!  Step-off is at Roosevelt School and participants will march to Veteran’s Park.

Earth Day Westchester 2009 Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Kensico Dam Plaza, rain or shine.  Live music and entertainment, first 50 families receive a free “earth machine” composting bin, free “green raffle”, lawn and gardening Q & A,, enjoy fresh, local produce at the farmers market, first 500 families get a free reusable shopping bag, alternative fuel vehicles exhibit, Westchester County Sustainability/Recycling Awards & Prizes and more.  Free admission and parking, for more information call 211.


Pitch In for Parks County-wide volunteer spring clean-up April 19  The 15th annual county-wide Pitch In for Parks volunteer clean-up program, part of the county's Earth Day observance, takes place Sunday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the county parks system. Civic-minded volunteer groups and individuals will spend all or part of the day painting, pruning, planting, raking, clearing debris and tidying up shorelines at more than 40 Westchester County parks, nature preserves and recreational trails. The rain date is April 26. “Pitch In” welcomes groups and individuals who want to spruce up their favorite spot for hiking, swimming, picnicking or relaxing, or who just want to make a difference in their communities. By pitching in, participants play an active role in the stewardship of the Westchester County parks, which encompass more than 18,000 acres of parks, trails and nature centers. Participants should dress appropriately for work. Work gloves and cleaning tools and supplies will be provided for all volunteers who have signed up in advance.

-A Saw Mill River Audubon Special Spring Family Activity.  Get into Birding this Spring!  Birding for Beginners.  Learn about the birds in your neighborhood, and how to identify them by sight and song.  Workshop participants each receive a basic birding kit which includes a CD of common bird songs.  For children age 10 & up, and adults, Saturday, April 25th 2-4 p.m. in the Budarz Theater.  Space is limited!  Pre-registration required by April 20th, online at, or call 666-6503.  There is a materials fee.  For further information call the Children's Room at 914-941-2416 ext. 337.   

- El Dia Del Nino, Children's Book Day!  David Rinaldi & the Fireflies at The Ossining Public Library.  A bi-lingual children's concert and sing-along for all ages!  Come hear songs about hiking in the woods and cleaning messy rooms.  David likes to invite adventurous fans on stage to help strum his guitar and sing along.  Come and hear on Tuesday, April 28th at 7 p.m. in the Budarz Theater. 


2009 Earth Day Celebration / Stash The Trash will take place on Saturday, April 25th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. On Saturday, April 25th, at 10:00 a.m., rain or shine, volunteers will meet to clean up the trash which has accumulated during the winter months in our parks and along our roadsides.  Plan to bring any necessary tools, especially heavy work gloves. Plan to stay all 3 hours, if possible. Children old enough to work with supervision are encouraged to bring their parents to join us. Plastic bags will be provided. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.  Please join us at one of the four locations for staging; The Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, the Louis Engel Park on the Waterfront, The Jug Tavern, and The Historical Society.  Coordinating the event this year will be the Ossining H.S. Learn To Make Music with Steel Drums.  St. Paul's Steel Drum Band is sponsoring a Steel Drum Clinic on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 1:00pm - 5pm. Each student will have his/her own steel drum to play. Two hours of hands-on instruction. Following the clinic, we will hold a mini concert for all to enjoy. Cost per participant: $10.00 at door. Children of all ages and adults are welcome. A Brand New Musical! The Taylor Thomas Traveling Troupe is pleased to present a new musical, The Dance Teacher, co-written by John Taylor Thomas and Sarah Davis. The Dance Teacher is a charming love story about a widower who falls in love with his ballroom dance instructor. Lighthearted and fun, this original musical has beautiful music and dancing, but it also illustrates the patience and understanding that is needed to create successful relationships with those we love. John Taylor Thomas also wrote the musicals, Mail Order Maggie, Central Park, and The Gift of the Magi. This fundraising performance is on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 7:30pm, at St. Paul's On-The-Hill Episcopal Church, 40 Ganung Drive (off Rt. 133 east of Rt. 9A), Ossining. Westchester County and the Women’s Enterprise Development Center will host a Minority- and Women-Owned Business Networking Expo on Thursday, April 30th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Westchester County Center.  The purpose of this event is to bring county and local municipal procurement officers and businesses together to meet and network, which will open doors to create leads to contacts and partnerships.  The venue set-up will enable participants to move from booth to booth and meet representatives from municipalities and the county.   Westchester County Minority- and Women-Owned Business Program Networking Expo, Thursday, April 30, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Westchester County Center, 198 Central Avenue, White Plains.

Memoir Writing Workshop For People of All Ages, 18+. During this supportive, non-critical workshop, Shelley Gilbert, Ossining author/instructor will teach you how to write a short memoir about a certain period in your life, a longer memoir covering your lifespan, or help you reconnect with a memoir already started. A 55 Alive /Mature Safe Driving course will be given at the Ossining Public Library on Wednesday, May 20th and Thursday, May 21st. The time for each session is from 9 a.m - 1:15 p.m. You must attend both days and the full four hour time period each day to be awarded a certificate of completion. The class will be taught by Neville Horne a trained volunteer instructor.  Enrollment in the 55 Alive/Mature Driving is limited. Fee for the course is $10.00 per participant. Applications are available in the library both on the main floor and the lower level. The class will be held in the theater.  Mail your enrollment application to 55 Alive/Mature Driving c/o Neville Horne, 5 Osage Drive W., Ossining.
