The Village Board is seeking applicants to serve on a Sculpture Committee.  Vacancies exist on a newly formed Sculpture Committee.  This ad hoc committee will help identify and collectively choose sculpture to be installed at the waterfront.  Interested parties should forward a letter of interest to Village Manager, Linda G. Ossining Community Action Youth Program Along with Unity in the Community presents a Read In for Black History Month February 21, 2009 from 1:00 pm. – 5:00 p.m. Join Ossining C.A.P. along with Unity in the Community for a day of poetry, poems, short stories, singing, dancing and narratives to celebrate black heritage.  The event will be held at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, 95 Broadway, Ossining for more information call C.A.P. at 923-6380.

 

IFCA Wins Multiple Public Funding Grants - Executive Director June A. Jarvis announced Interfaith Council for Action, Inc. has been awarded six public funding awards totaling $312,000 from New York State; Westchester County; and EmPower New York, a NYSERDA program.  The funding will go towards building renovations on three of  IFCA’s 14 multifamily homes in the Village of Ossining.  A not-for-profit launched in 1968 serving all members in the community, IFCA’s mission is to “sustain community, diversity, and opportunity through affordable/workforce housing and vital social services.”  For further information contact Debra Descloux, Deputy Director at 914/941/5252 ext. 11 or go to www.ifcany.org.

 

Ossining Public Library Events…

-It's That Time Again!  Need Help With Your Taxes?  Tax Aide will be available at the library on Thursdays starting February 5th - April 9th from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the theater.  Tax Aide volunteers have been IRS trained and certified.  Bring last year's tax forms, social security statements, bank statements, and any other pertinent information (i.e. contributions).  For more information please contact:  Jane Clark at 914-941-2416 ext. 326, or the Reference Dept. at ext. 320. 

 

St. Ann's School will host our 7th annual African-American Dinner, "Soul food and Caribbean flavor".  Friday February 6, 2009 6 to 10 pm.  $10 adults, $6 children and seniors, $25 family (2 adults, 2 kids.)  DJ, entertainment, and raffles.  The dinner will be held at St. Ann's School, 16 Elizabeth St.  941-0312.

 

Troop 49's Annual Pasta Dinner & Basket Raffle will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at St. Augustine’s  School, Route 9 Eagle Park, Ossining Admission at the Door:  $7.00 Per Person, $24.00 Per Group of 4.  Menu:  Pasta, Meatballs, or Sausages, Salad, Bread, Soda, Coffee/Tea and Dessert. The Preservation Company, in coordination with IFCA, is offering free tax filing located at 55 Bank Street Peekskill, NY 10566 on Thursday’s from 12-4pm through the end of the tax season. There are income limitations.  For further information or call 914-734-8928 or 914-734-8797 and ask for Anthony.  Please keep in mind that while walk ins are welcomed you must have specific tax information in order for the preparer to complete your taxes.  All taxes will be filed electronically.  Get all the credits that you are entitled to and best of all, keep your entire refund – we never charge any fees.  This Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is sponsored by Wachovia Foundation.

 

St. Ann’s CYO Basketball “Basket–For-Bucks” Fundraiser February 14th This is St. Ann’s signature and ultimate fund raiser of the season!  Designed like any sponsored race or walk-a-thon; Individual team players collect donations from sponsors who promise a specified amount of money for each point that player scores in a given amount of time.  Flat donations are also accepted.  All teams have participated and mostly all players have contributed to this event.  The event is held in a carnival-like atmosphere with games, food, music and all-around fun!  Super raffles are held for big ticket items that were graciously donated specifically for the event.  This year we are offering an Xbox 360 Arcade System, a 32” LCD TV, and court-level NY Knick Tickets!  Smaller raffle tickets are also sold for other donated items such as baskets of cheer, t-shirts, sweatshirts, various gift certificates, etc…Portions of the proceeds have always gone toward St. Ann’s Church and in addition, each year we pick a special designation.  Miles Adams, currently in 7th grade, was stricken with a malignant brain tumor in 3rd grade.  He miraculously returned this year to CYO – in remission and feeling blessed!  This year – in honor of Miles, St. Ann’s CYO is donating 20% of the Basket-for-Bucks proceeds to the Maria Ferrari Children’s Hospital.  Miles family has said, had it not been for them – Miles would not be here today – shooting baskets and making us all smile that much more!  Historically – Basket-for-Bucks has generated proceeds between $6,000 and $8,000 per year!   We hope this year to top them all!!  To donate you can contact any of the board members at any of our home-stands or contact our CYO Coordinator – Gavin Quain (914) 643-3271.

 

Teatown Event - Night Hike Bring your BFF, sweetheart or any friend, for a honey of a night hike that is sure to warm the blood and open your eyes to nature at night. We’ll listen for owls on the prowl and look for tracks of animals busy on a cold winter’s eve. Join us for mulled cider afterward in the Nature Center. Not suitable for children under age 6. Teatown Event - Winter Break Mini-Camp Shake off the mid-winter doldrums by getting up and out at Teatown! Every day is packed with outdoor adventures and indoor discoveries. If there is snow we’ll look for tracks and make some of our own using snowshoes. Mini-camp includes visits with Teatown’s animals, nature crafts and engaging environmental activities. If you are doing other business downtown please use the municipal lots. Also please be aware that overnight parking in the Post Office Parking Lot is NOT permitted. The Post Office will be towing illegally parked cars as they are becoming a problem with snow removal and congestion.

Three local churches, Briarcliff Congregational, Scarborough Presbyterian and First Presbyterian of Ossining will be taking their youth to New Orleans for the 2nd Annual NOLA Rebuild relief trip this February.  In conjunction with this effort, they are putting on fundraising events, open to the public.

Once again the “Foodies” will be serving Gumbo for God, Jambalaya for Jesus, and ...yes, pancakes for all. Ice Skating at Veterans’ Park, Narragansett Avenue!  The Recreation Department along with help from the Fire Department have prepared the pond at Veterans’ Park for ice skating.  So bundle up, get your skates and enjoy the winter!  Skating is permitted Monday - Friday 4PM - 9PM (Weather permitting), Saturday & Sunday 12PM- 9PM.

Ossining Public Library Events:

-A special Kids Book Sale including books, videos, games and other treasures will be on Saturday, February 14th from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and again on Sunday from 12 -3 p.m. For kids who bring their parents and other adults there will also be a selection of adult material.  See you in the theater.

-Weslee and Eugene McGovern will lead a new four part book discussion at the Ossining library beginning in January. "The Cairo Trilogy" by the Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1988, Naguib Mahfouz will be the subject. The Trilogy consists of "Palace Walk", "Palace of Desire", and "Sugar Street'. "Palace Walk" will be covered in two sessions on January 12 and February 9. The other books will be discussed on March 9 and April 13. The McGoverns lived in Cairo from 2000-2007 and visited many times the streets and neighborhoods that are the setting for the Trilogy. Discussions will take place in the Conference Room beginning at 7 p.m.

- The Ossining Public Library Presents The Winter Film Series:  Academy Award Winners Best Foreign FilmsFebruary 11th Investigation of A Citizen Above Suspicion (Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogni Sospetto) Italy (1970) Directed by Elio Petri 112 minutes.  All films begin at 7 p.m. and are located in the OPL theater.  Discussions following the films are led by Shlomi Ron and curated by Bonnie Katz.  Free admission and refreshments.

 

The Ossining Library's Great Music Series in association with the Stecker and Horowitz Foundation will present pianist Charlie Albright, the first to perform in the Nadia Reisenberg Young Artist Series, on Sunday, February 22nd. The gifted 20 year old pianist will perform works by Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt at 3:00 p.m. in the theater. In 2006 Albright was the first in the history of the New York Piano competition to win two first prizes.  He has also been a winner at the Northwest Chopin Festival and in 2005 won another first prize at the 2005 International Piano Competition. In December 2008 he performed with cellist Yo-Yo Ma at a ceremony honoring Senator Ted Kennedy. Presently Charlie Albright is in a joint program between Harvard and the New England Conservatory of Music. Join us in welcoming Charlie Albright to our stage Sunday, February 22nd.                  

 

St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church presents their 51st Annual Black History Banquet Dinner Dance to be held on Friday, February 27th from 7:30 p.m.12 Midnight at Colonial Terrace, 119 Oregon Road, Cortlandt Manor.  Donations:  $65 per person, children under 12: $25 per child.  Musical entertainment provided by DJ Cintron.  For tickets call Beverly Green at 914-438-9417, Clair Jones at 914-969-3116 or Lois Lassiter at (914) 262-6697.

 

Hockey registration for the Spring Season is starting.  In-person registration will take place at the Ossining Community Center on Saturday, February 28th from 10:00AM to 12:00pm or Tues., March 3rd from 7:00PM-8:30pm.  You may also mail your registration to me with your check for $75.00 made out to the OYHA (see attached registration form.)  All players are required to carry insurance through USA Hockey.  Please use their website to sign up for insurance.  Make sure you sign them up as an in-line skater.   Here is the link www.USAhockeyregistration.com .  Please print out confirmation and attach a copy to your registration.  Please sign parent code of conduct and return also.
