Town Council Member Position Available

The Town of Ossining is accepting resumes for an open position on the Ossining Town Council.  Town residency required.  Send letter of interest and resume to the Town Board, Town of Ossining, 16 Croton Avenue, Ossining, NY 10562 or fax (914) 762-0833 by March 31, 2008.

Ossining Annual Eggstravaganza will be held Saturday, March 22nd at 10 a.m. at Ryder Park (off Morningside Drive) and at 12:00 p.m. at Nelson Sitting Park (adjacent to Park School).  This event is for children 10 years old and younger.  Pre-registration is NOT required.  Please come to join in the fun and have your picture taken with our giant bunny.

 

Ossining Student Artists Paint Mural at Caputo Community Center Through a grant from Ossining Communities That Care, a group of students from the A.M.D. Middle School and the Recreation Department After-School Program, directed and assisted by Artist Andrea Hersh, painted a 6’ high by 20’ long acrylic paint mural.  The mural, yet to be named, graces a wall of a second floor hallway leading to the indoor pool and depicts an underwater scene.  The students who worked on the project are:  Alyssa Aurora, Maya Aviles, Daniela Barros, Stephen Candelaria, Daisa Gully, Andra E. Hunter, Gregory Martinez, Tylik Ridenhour, Monee Samuels, Jennifer Sanchez, Arthur Stokeley, Darion Terry, Terrance Thomas, and Daniela Vasco.  Special thanks to Ossining Communities That Care, Ms. Andrea Hersh and all the children who helped to liven up a plain brick corridor!  Please stop by to admire the work of these young artists.

More OPL Events…

-AARP Tax Assistance began on Thursday, February 7th and will continue Thursdays through April 10th at the library. Time & Place: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The IRS trained & certified volunteers will be in the theater on the lower level. Those wishing to have their taxes prepared by the AARP volunteers must bring with them all necessary papers including a copy of last year's return.

-Biographical Musicals: “Fact or Fiction"  with Lu Gmoser is a 5 week Mainstream course set for  5 Wednesdays in April from 1-3 p.m. in the theater. Free. Register at Mainstream, Westchester Community College at 914- 606-6793. The five musicals to be discussed are "Gypsy", "The King and I", "Annie Get your Gun"," De-Lovely" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy." 

-Ossining resident, Howard Ravis will have on exhibit during March an exhibit of his photographs that will include scenes of New York City and Rockfeller Park.   His exhibit is titled "Good Eye Part 11"   Howard took part in the "Celebrate Ossining" exhibits at the old library and his photo of Sparta Cemetery was one of five selected to be included in a special packet of Ossining Postcards. Howard recently donated a series of animal photographs that will be on permanent display in the Junior Room.

-On Friday, March 28th the library has invited 3 authors to speak on a variety of issues that are included in a new anthology titled "Illness and Grace"  The book is a collection of personal stories and poetry exploring themes of illness and trauma and the way people respond to them. The authors are Susan Hodara, Joan Potter and Andrea Rosenhaft. The event is the Friday Forum which begins with a brown bag luncheon, dessert & beverage provided by the Library Associates. it all takes place in the theater. The three authors recently spoke at the Hudson Valley Writers Center in Sleepy Hollow.

-Classic Italian Films will be shown this spring at the library on Thursday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. in the theater. Admission free. The films have been selected by Shlomi Ron, co-founder of cafe Pelllcola a popular blog dedicated to fine Italian cinema, represent different styles from late Neorealism to the Italian comedy genres of the 1950's & '60's Shlomi will also lead a discussion following each film. The 1st film is "The Job - II Posto" scheduled for March 27th. "Big Deal on Madonna Street - I Soliti Ignoti" will be seen on April 24th and on May 29th the series concludes with "Too Bad She's Bad - Peccato che sia una Canaglia."

-Annual Spring Book Sale Dates and Times: Saturday April 5 from 9 a.m. -5 p.m.; Sunday April 6 from 12 noon - 5 p.m. On Monday, April 7th there will be a Bag sale from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.. Those coming to the bag sale are also asked to bring their own BYOBB (Bring your own brown bag - grocery store size) and coupon they received either on Saturday or Sunday at the sale.  Volunteers are needed for set up and cashiering. Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce Monthly Meeting, Monday, March 31st.    This month’s featured speaker will be Dr. Phyllis Glassman, Superintendent of the Ossining School District.  Dr. Glassman will be reviewing the upcoming budget and the increasing cost factors that the school district faces followed by a discussion of current trends in education.  The discussion will be moderated by Gayle Marchica.  The meeting will be held at the J. Golden Apple Chorus of Sweet Adelines International is an award winning chorus of woman singers of all ages, from all walks of life; founded in April, 1969 they are committed to educational and artistic goals through musical entertainment. One of the best ways to minimize the risk of identity theft is to shred documents you're no longer using that bear personal identifying information such as name, address, phone number, credit card number or Social Security number. Such documents should be shredded before they are thrown out in the garbage.  The Westchester County Mobile Shredder will be in Briarcliff Manor on Saturday, March 29th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at 111 Pleasantville Road.  This free public service is intended for residents only. Come to the Rotary Art Auction & Wine & Cheese Fundraiser! Opening Day for Jessie Collier Youth Sports is Saturday, April 12, 2008. The Parade begins at Roosevelt School at 8:30 am and proceeds to Veterans Park for a brief ceremony. The first games begin immediately after the parade.

Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion Shower, The eighth offering of the Maryknoll International Film Festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be shown on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll Society Center, 55 Ryder Rd., in Ossining.  The series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: God’s Self-sacrificing Love Revealed in Relationships, continues with Shower, a 1999 Chinese film from director Zhang Yang.  Each film will be introduced by a Maryknoll missioner who will facilitate a brief discussion following the screening.  For a listing of all films in the series visit, www.maryknoll.org/filmfest.  For additional information call 941-7590.  Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the U.S.-based Catholic foreign mission society, has been representing U.S. Catholics in overseas mission since 1911. Volunteers are Needed for Our Annual Town-wide Clean-Up Day "Stash the Trash” scheduled for Saturday, April 26th beginning at 2:00 p.m. rain or shine.  Volunteers will meet at pre-determined locations throughout Ossining and work for 3 hours to clean up the trash which has accumulated during the winter months in our parks and along our roadsides.  Plan to bring any necessary tools, especially heavy work gloves and please plan on staying for all 3 hours if possible. Children old enough to work with supervision are encouraged to bring their parents to join us. Plastic bags will be provided. Filled bags are picked up at special locations.  Thank you refreshments will start at the Community Center and at the Briarcliff Youth Center for Briarcliff residents. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.  Coordinating the event this year will be the Ossining H.S. Interact Club. The final program of Collegium Westchester’s season is scheduled for June 7 at 8 pm and will feature two pieces quoting the Lutheran chorale A Mighty Fortress Is Our God: Bach’s Cantata 80 and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5. This concert will be preceded by an exhibit of works by local artists, including Adele Kamp, from 5-7 pm.  More information about Collegium Westchester is available from www.collegiumwestchester.org, or 914-282-8611. March’s Energy Saving Ideas – For the Home Office

-If you have Energy Star labeled office equipment (computer, fax, printer, scanner), remember to activate the sleep function.  In a small office, Energy Star equipment can save about $470 per year.

-Install motion detectors so that lights are on only when you need them.  Encourage your employer to do the same.

-Use desk or table lamps instead of overhead lights.

-Change furnace filters according to manufacturer’s recommendation.

The Great Duck Race of Ossining scheduled for May 17, 2008.  Festivities begin at 2:00 p.m.  Race begins at 3:00 p.m.  Sponsored by the Ossining Rotary Club whose motto is “Service Above Self”.  This Rotary organization is dedicated to helping others; proceeds from the race will be used to help support local community organizations, Safety Net Groups and many hands-on projects right here in Ossining.  In addition proceeds from the Duck Race will also support the Ossining Interact Club’s efforts to raise money to fund a water project in Honduras.  Many ducks have been sold already so make sure you get yours A.S.A.P.  Ducks are $10/each and there will only be 2,500 ducks sold this year…Just think Duck Race...Ask any Rotarian or Interactor for more information.  Go to the web page ossiningrotary.org or Rotary District 7230 at http://www.rotary7230.org to see the great work of our local district.  If you would like to mail your duck order, please send to:  The Great Duck Race of Ossining, c/o the Rotary Club of Ossining, P.O.
