Ossining Fire Department Annual $1,500 Scholarship - The Annual Walter Quast Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who lives in or attends school in the Ossining School District.  The scholarship is awarded based upon a combination of scholastic achievement, student character, community involvement and financial need.  Applications are available from the Ossining High School Guidance Department or from the Ossining Fire Department Headquarters at 21 State Street, Ossining.  Applications must be received on or before April 17, 2009.


Congratulations to Ossining Dog Park, they were selected as one of the top 10 dog parks in the country by Dog Fancy magazine for their community events!  Don’t forget this year’s Bark In the Park will be held on June 20TH at Engel Park!  For more information go to  


The Ossining Community Tennis Association cordially invites you & a guest to attend "LIGHT UP OSSINING TENNIS" Join us on Friday, March 27th at 7 p.m. for
Fine Wine Tasting and Hors D' Oeuvres as we celebrate our kick-off event to obtain lighting for Nelson Park Courts and bring Night Tennis to Ossining.  The wine-tasting is being held to raise money for lights at the Nelson Park Tennis Courts and will be held Friday, March 27th at 7 PM at Jeannette and Matko Gerber's home at 55 Van Cortlandt Avenue. To attend please send a check for $40 per person to Jerry Ross, 30 State Street, Ossining, NY 10562.  Lights for the courts will greatly increase evening activity at the park and benefit the entire community, from students to seniors.   


Rotary Club of Ossining Spaghetti Dinner Rotary International is known for many accomplishments; the one that stands out is the dedication to eradicate polio from the face of the earth, 90% has been accomplished, but there are still pockets especially in Africa that many teams are working on at this very moment.  Bill Gates and his Foundation has challenged Rotary International to match the foundation 100 million dollar contribution to rid the world of polio.  Each club has been asked to work toward that goal.  The Rotary Club of Ossining has decided that there is nothing better then an evening with friends and family enjoying a Spaghetti and Meatball dinner...find out more about this exciting cause....renew old acquaintances, meet new people and enjoy the Ossining community.  On Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Highland Ave, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, $15.00 per person, $10.00 for children under 10.  Menu - Spaghetti, meatballs & sausage, salad, soda, wine and dessert.  For more information or to R.S.V.P. contact:  Sue Donnelly at or Judy Herguth at 424-1133.

OPL Event…

On Sunday, March 29th Great Music continues at the Ossining Public Library with a performance by pianist Hannah Sun. The concert will feature works by Debussy, Bach, Chopin, Schubert, Rameau, and Prokofiev.  The performance will take place in the Budarz Theater beginning at 3 p.m. The concert is free and all are welcome.  This concert is the 2nd in the Nadia Reisenberg Young Artists Series. The library's Young Artist Series is in association with the Stecker and Horowitz Foundation. Our next concert is scheduled for Sunday, April 26 with pianist Allen Yueh.


Hydrant Flushing Schedule The Village of Ossining Water Department will begin flushing fire hydrants throughout the Village on Sunday evening, March 29, 2009.  Flushing of hydrants will be performed between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. in order to minimize disruptions to our residents and will take approximately four weeks to complete.  As the flushing of hydrants takes place closer to your home, you may notice some discoloration in your water first thing in the morning.  Do not be alarmed.  Just run your water for a short period of time and it should clear up.  If the discoloration persists, please notify the Water Department at 941-6111.  The Water Department regrets any temporary inconvenience you may experience; however, this operation is necessary for us to ensure the continued cleanliness of the water distribution system.  We will do everything possible to minimize any problems.


Internet Awareness for Students and Parents Presented by Thomas Grimes of NY Finest Speakers LLC Come Listen, Learn & Share.  Mr. Grimes recently appeared on the Today Show as part of their series, “Inside Your Teen’s World.”  Mr. Grimes will be doing presentations for students during the school day on cyber bullying, harassment, stalking, predators, and how to stay “safe” on the internet for the 6th, 7th and 8th grades at AMD.  The evening program will be a presentation & discussion for both parents and students about the potential longterm consequences of inappropriate internet behavior with a focus on the social networking sites FACEBOOK and MYSPACE.  March 30, 2009, 7:00 p.m. in the Anne M. Dorner Middle School Cafeteria Van Cortlandt Avenue, Ossining.


Part-time AmeriCorps position available at Open Door Family Medical Center. Coordinate volunteers for our Reach Out and Read early literacy program. This is a PT AmeriCorps volunteer position and benefits include monthly stipend, educational award, health benefits, and professional development. Spanish speakers encouraged to apply.  Formerly known as SeniorNet, The Town of Ossining’s Computer Learning for Adults offers computer courses for seniors and other adults who are uncertain about how to use their computers. The Beginner's Course covers the basics—how to use the mouse, write, edit, save, & print files, and email. The Internet Course focuses on do's and don'ts of email, finding information on websites, and security.  Each course is six classes, (the Beginner's on Mondays & Wednesdays for three weeks; the Internet class on Fridays for six weeks), and the cost is $50 per course. Class size is small, six students at most, with one or two assistants to help the instructor. (A minimum of four students is needed to conduct a course, which is why the schedule is subject to change.)  If you know anyone who needs basic computer instruction, please let them know about this. Acting Workshop in Ossining! 4 Week Acting Workshop! Learn about acting with professional acting coach, Sheila Speller, Ossining resident. The workshops will be held on Fridays - April 3, April 10, April 17, and April 24. There's a class for Teen Jrs. - Monday, April 27th, Writers on Writing the Art, Craft and Business of Getting Published - panelists include authors Kirsten Bakis, Preston Keat, Susanna Reich, Jason Riley, Timothy Schenck and Literary agent Amy Williams.

Vanishing America The Films of John Ford:  April 1st, Steamboat 'Round the Bend (1935), - May 6th, The Grapes of Wrath (1940), June 3rd, My Darling Clementine (1946)  All films are on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Budarz Theater.  Curated by Bonnie Katz, discussions are moderated by Mark Hasskarl, free admission and refreshments.  

 You saw the see the play!  On Thursday evening, April 16th M&M Productions is bringing to the library "Doubt, a Parable" by John Patrick Shanley. Winner of the 2005 Pulitizer-Prize, the Tony Award, and the New York Drama Critics Award, "Doubt" features Michael Muldoon, Janice Fay Hanges, Leslie Smithey and Sarah Smegal  in starring roles. The play has been directed by Stewart Hanges.  The setting is the Bronx , 1964. Doubt is a gripping story about the quest for truth, the forces of change, and the devastating results of blind justice. A clash of wills ignites this searing drama about truth, innocence and honor.   Michael Muldoon appears courtesy of Actors Equity.  The play will be on the O.P.L. stage in the Budarz Theater. Ossining MATTERS presents Music From An American Icon: Rosanne Cash featuring John Leventhal.  Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash will headline a concert to benefit Ossining MATTERS, our community's education foundation.  Cash's husband, Grammy-winning producer-songwriter John Leventhal, a Westchester native, will appear with her. Students from OHS will also perform.  Saturday, April 18, 7pm. Shoppers used to getting their local food fixes at the Ossining Farmers Market can now support their farmers all winter long at the Briarcliff Indoor Farmers Market held two Saturdays a month from 8:30am-2pm in the Briarcliff Congregational Church on the corner of Elm Street and South State Road.  The Briarcliff Market boasts many of the farm products enjoyed all summer including, pasture raised meat and poultry, pickles, produce, specialty foods, artisanal cheeses, cider, apples, pears, cider donuts, crusty bread and baked goods.  The remaining market dates are: 4/4, 4/18, 5/2, 5/16.

OPL Event…Paintings and drawings spanning 75 years by the late WPA Artist Jerome Henry Roth will be on exhibit at the Ossining Public Library from April 1-25. Opening reception will be Saturday, April 4 from 2-4 p.m. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Roth became the youngest member of the poster division of the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.  He went on to design posters for the U.S. Tourist Bureau, Orson Welles Theatre, and the U.S. Dept. of Health and later for Warner Brothers producing material for movies. During W.W. II Roth volunteered with the U.S. Army Air Corps flying 30 missions over Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.  After the War he returned to drawing and painting.  His paintings have been shown over the years at the Garrison Art Center, Cortlandt Center for the Arts, Overseas Press Club, Nardin Fine Art in Cross River, at the Susan Teller Gallery in New York, at Silvermine Guild in Ct. and elsewhere in the East.

Westchester Bike Summit is an event that draws together planners, public officials, employers, and cyclist to discuss how to make biking and bike commuting more a part of Westchester’s transportation mix.  The event is free and will take place on Tuesday, April 7th at Westchester County Center in White Plains and runs from 3 – 8 p.m.  Register at  Call 914-217-5600 for more information. 


John Paul Rodrigues Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner and Show at the Westchester Broadway Theatre on April 8th, 2009 at 6:00 p.m.  The Scholarship is in memory of John-Paul Rodrigues, a 1998 graduate of Ossining High School and Village of Ossining sanitation worker who died on the job on July 20, 2005.  Tickets are $75.00 per person.  For reservations, or if you have any questions contact Joe Rodrigues at 941-3277 by March 14th. 


Office of African American Affairs "Blueprint for Change" Summit  will be held on April 14th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Purchase College in Purchase.  The Westchester County African American Advisory Board and the Westchester County Office of African American Affairs is presenting the Summit.  Keynote speaker will be television host Gil Noble, a well known television reporter and journalist. He is also known for his work as the host of WABC TV’s weekly public affairs series, “Like it Is.”  The Summit will also include workshops and interactive discussions on addressing disparities in health, education, housing and economic development.  For more information, contact the Office of African American Affairs (914) 995-2925.
