The Ossining Public Library Associates organization will be sponsoring an outdoor Book Sale at the library on Tuesday, July 8 and Wednesday, July 9 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day. The Ossining Board of Education is seeking six to nine district residents with varied backgrounds to be part of a Facilities Advisory Committee. Experience that would be beneficial to the committee includes person with organizational management skills, a financial background, an understanding of statistics, experience in business, construction, architecture space utilization, technology, education or management. The Committee will likely meet a few times during the summer and then begin meeting regularly about two times a month for the next two years. Volunteers Needed to serve on the Village of Ossining Landlord-Tenant Relations Council The Village of Ossining is currently seeking a resident to serve as a Tenant Representative and also a resident to serve as an Impartial Member of the Council. The Council’s powers and duties include: conducting research into community housing problems, formulating programs to improve landlord-tenant relations, accumulating statistical information on available housing accommodations, counseling the Board of Trustees on landlord-tenant problems and disputes and recommend programs for the solution of same, and resolving problems and disputes between landlords and tenants through mediation and discussion at meetings of the Council. Customer Outage Maps Available on Con Edison Website Con Edison provides online maps that allow users to pinpoint outage locations by logging on to www.conEd.com/outagemap and clicking the “Storm Central” icon on the home page or by selecting “outage location maps” from the quicklinks menu. The new site provides complete Con Edison service territory maps with color-coded legends indicating the range of customers without service, and where to locate outage areas on the map. Additional information is broken down by borough for New York City, and by municipality for Westchester County. All data is updated at 30-minute intervals. For more map details, a “Summary” feature enables users to tab to either New York City or Westchester County for the latest information on active outages and affected customers, plus the time when the information was last updated. Finding the location of a specific address can be obtained by using the “Go To” tab located on the lower right portion of the map. Just fill in an address or a ZIP code. Maps can be saved by using the “Favorites” features. The company urges customers to report power interruptions or service problems online at www.conEd.com, or by calling Con Edison’s toll-free customer service number 1-800-75-CON ED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power. Con Edison has taken multiple steps to upgrade its emergency response. - Dan Garbera will exhibit at the Ossining Public Library throughout July his photographic show titled "New York in the 60's in Black & White.The exhibit is an expression of one particular decade that had a profound impact on decades yet to come. It focuses on the people and places, within the great city, during those years. The 27 images that are on display were all shot in black & white negative film and printed by the photographer onto gelatin silver photographic paper.

-"55 Safe Driving Course" will be offered on July 23rd and 24th from 9 a.m.- 1:15 p.m. Neville Horne, instructor. -On July 24th Dr. Steve Goodstein will present a program to discuss "Natural Solutions to Sleep Disorders". He will cover natural means of improving and even correcting all common types of sleep disturbances. Insomnia, fatigue, sleep apnea, back pain upon arising, sleep positions, types of pillows and mattresses are just a few of the topics that will be covered. -A Summer Evening Movie series titled "Forbidden Hollywood" will be at the library in July and August. The series will show films made before production codes limited what could and could not be shown. The series begins on Wednesday, July 9th with "Baby Face" starring Barbara Stanwyck and John Wayne to be followed on July 30th with "Waterloo Bridge" with Bette Davis. On August 6th a Double Feature: "Three on a Match" with Bette Davis and Joan Blondell and "Female" with Ruth Chatterton. The final film in the series will be on August 13th "Red Headed Woman" with Jean Harlow and Charles Boyer. Films will be shown in the theater beginning at 7 p.m. Admission free.

Westies Unite Storms Ossining Dog Park Westies Unite is holding a National Meet and Greet at the Ossining Dog Park on Sunday, July 13, 2008. The event is scheduled with the dogs starting to arrive at the dog park around 9:30am, and will probably finish up around 3:30 after the Silent Auction is finished. Sunday’s events will include games and costume contests for its members as well as an auction benefiting a Westie rescue organization. Westies Unite, formed in January 2006, is an online group of over 1000 West Highland White Terriers and their owners. Westies Unite’s members also give back to the nation’s community of Westies. Every year Westies Unite makes a donation to Westie Rescue through an auction held at its national meet and greet. Westies Unite has chosen Westie Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc. as the beneficiary of its auction at the Ossining Dog Park. Popular Speaker and Writer on Spirituality, Joyce Rupp, to present Lecture at Maryknoll Joyce Rupp will speak on the topic of Spiritual Transformation: Growing Deeper, Stronger, Freer and More Loving, on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., at the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Center in Ossining, as part of the Maryknoll Speakers Series. In her exploration of spiritual transformation, Rupp will share the seeds of her own spiritual endeavor, weaving poetry and story through her insights as she reflects on the mystery and discovery of one’s authentic self. She will affirm, challenge, inspire and encourage the audience on their own path of spiritual growth. Joyce Rupp, a member of the Servites (Servants of Mary) community, is well-known for her work as a writer and conference speaker, and has led retreats throughout North America and around the world. She has written numerous books, several with Maryknoll’s publishing arm, Orbis Books: The Cosmic Dance, Walk in a Relaxed Manner: Life Lessons from the Camino, and most recently, Prayer. The Maryknoll Speakers Series offers timely and stimulating talks and discussions on matters of faith and social concern. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive walk supporting the American Cancer Society's mission to fight cancer on four fronts: research, education, advocacy, and patient services. The walk will take place on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY. Registration is from 8-10. The event starts at 9:30-10:30.
