Con Edison Urges Customers to Pay Bill Online Con Edison is urging customers to consider “greening” their finances for April’s “PayItGreen” month.  Con Edison is a member of the PayItGreen Alliance,, which was formed in 2007 and comprises 20 leaders in the financial and consumer billing industries.  The Alliance seeks to educate consumers about the positive environmental impact of choosing electronic bills, statements and payments over paper alternatives.  Con Edison’s e*bill program notifies customers via e-mail when bills are ready for viewing.  Switching to e*bill is easy, and customers can visit to learn how to sign up.  As an added incentive, the company will donate $1 for every customer who signs up for the e*bill program to a nonprofit tree planting fund.  For customers living in Westchester County, donations will be sent to Friends of Westchester Parks, Inc.


Three Seats Available on The Ossining Board of Education The Ossining Board of Education will hold its Annual Election and Budget Vote on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. This year three seats become available with the terms of Amanda Curley, Alice Joselow and Robert L. Wolf ending on June 30, 2008.  Petition packets for Board of Education candidates will be available on Friday, March 14, 2008. Interested candidates may obtain a petition packet from the District Clerk at the Roosevelt Education Center, 190 Croton Avenue, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.   The last day for filing petitions is 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2008.  For further information please contact:  Kathy Beirne, District Clerk, Board of Education, (914) 941-7700 x 317.


The Village of Ossining hosted the Westchester County CDBG day on March 27th in celebration of National Community Development Week (March 24 – March 30th.)  This program is celebrating 32 years of awarding Community Development Block Grants.  The event provided an opportunity to honor all Westchester Urban County Consortium members and non-for-profit recipients of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding who contribute to making the CDBG program a success.  In Ossining many of our public improvements and updates or improvements to our parks and recreation programs were made possible through a partnership of the municipality and the CDBG program.  Through the years the Ossining community has been fortunate enough to receive over $10 million in grants which were awarded to the Village and Town of Ossining, their residents and not-for-profit organizations.

Affordable Apartments for Rent The Village of Ossining and J & J Main Street LLC are pleased to announce that IFCA is accepting applications for two BEAUTIFUL, BRAND NEW apartments in Ossining, in accordance with the Affordable Housing Policy of the Village of Ossining.  One-bedroom, one-bath, 950 sq. ft. rent $1,042 plus utilities.  To qualify, your annual gross income must be at least $35,479 and cannot exceed $47,305 for one person; or $54,035 combined for two-person occupancy.  Applications will be ranked on a point system.  Preference given to Ossining Village residents, Municipal and School district employees, and Fire Department and Ambulance Corp. volunteers.   Equal Housing Opportunity.  For Applications:  IFCA, 138 Spring Street, Ossining 914-941-5252. 


Metro-North Announces New Timetables Effective Sunday, April 6th  On the Hudson Line Metro-North has added 41 more trains to the schedule each week, including 21 additional trains on weekends.  To serve a growing weekend ridership in particular, they have added nine new Lower Hudson Line limited-stop express trains on Saturdays and Sundays between Croton-Harmon and Grand Central.  (This change will also see Lower Hudson Line stops removed from nine Upper Hudson trains, resulting in faster service for Upper Hudson Line customers.  See a new timetable for details.)  Also, Metro-North will operate two new Upper Hudson “Saturday Only” limited-stop express trains (one inbound departing Poughkeepsie at 9:21 AM, and one outbound leaving Grand Central at 5:26 PM.)  Also a “Sunday Evening Only” inbound limited-stop express train will leave Poughkeepsie at 4:21 PM.  On weeknights, three new off-peak, Lower Hudson Line limited-stop expresses providing new service to Hastings and Dobbs Ferry will depart Grand Central at 9:16 PM, 9:55 PM and 10:55 PM.  (This change will also see Lower Hudson Line stops-Yonkers, Tarrytown, Scarborough and Ossining-removed from three Upper Hudson Line trains, making for a faster trip for all Upper Hudson Line customers.  For weekday morning customers traveling from Croton-Harmon through Tarrytown stations, Metro-North has added a new express train departing Croton-Harmon at 9 AM.  Also look for minor schedule adjustments to off-peak and weekend trains to accommodate the installation of concrete times from just north of Cold Spring to just north of Beacon.


Free Rabies Clinic for Pets of Westchester County Residents Sunday, April 6th from 10 AM to 2 PM by appointment only, Stamen Animal Hospital, 61 Quaker Ridge Road, New Rochelle.  For a free appointment, call Stamen Animal Hospital at 632-1269.  All county residents can bring their dogs, cats, and ferrets in for rabies vaccinations or booster shots free of charge if no examination is given.  Examinations and other types of vaccinations will be available at low cost during the clinic.  Cats and ferrets must be brought in carriers and dogs must be on a leash.  Aggressive dogs must be muzzeled.

-AARP Tax Assistance began on Thursday, February 7th and will continue Thursdays through April 10th at the library. Time & Place: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The IRS trained & certified volunteers will be in the theater on the lower level. Those wishing to have their taxes prepared by the AARP volunteers must bring with them all necessary papers including a copy of last year's return.

-Biographical Musicals: “Fact or Fiction"  with Lu Gmoser is a 5 week Mainstream course set for  5 Wednesdays in April from 1-3 p.m. in the theater. Free. Register at Mainstream, Westchester Community College at 914- 606-6793. The five musicals to be discussed are "Gypsy", "The King and I", "Annie Get your Gun"," De-Lovely" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy." 

-Classic Italian Films will be shown this spring at the library on Thursday evenings beginning at 7 p.m. in the theater. Admission free. The films have been selected by Shlomi Ron, co-founder of cafe Pellcola a popular blog dedicated to fine Italian cinema, represent different styles from late Neorealism to the Italian comedy genres of the 1950's & '60's Shlomi will also lead a discussion following each film. The 1st film is "The Job - II Posto" scheduled for March 27th. "Big Deal on Madonna Street - I Soliti Ignoti" will be seen on April 24th and on May 29th the series concludes with "Too Bad She's Bad - Peccato che sia una Canaglia."

-Annual Spring Book Sale Dates and Times: Saturday April 5 from 9 a.m. -5 p.m.; Sunday April 6 from 12 noon - 5 p.m. On Monday, April 7th there will be a Bag sale from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.. Those coming to the bag sale are also asked to bring their own BYOBB (Bring your own brown bag - grocery store size) and coupon they received either on Saturday or Sunday at the sale.  Volunteers are needed for set up and cashiering. Golden Apple Chorus of Sweet Adelines International is an award winning chorus of woman singers of all ages, from all walks of life; founded in April, 1969 they are committed to educational and artistic goals through musical entertainment. Opening Day for Jessie Collier Youth Sports is Saturday, April 12, 2008. The Parade begins at Roosevelt School at 8:30 am and proceeds to Veterans Park for a brief ceremony. The first games begin immediately after the parade.

Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion Shower, The eighth offering of the Maryknoll International Film Festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be shown on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll Society Center, 55 Ryder Rd., in Ossining.  The series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: God’s Self-sacrificing Love Revealed in Relationships, continues with Shower, a 1999 Chinese film from director Zhang Yang.  Each film will be introduced by a Maryknoll missioner who will facilitate a brief discussion following the screening.  For a listing of all films in the series visit,  For additional information call 941-7590.  Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the U.S.-based Catholic foreign mission society, has been representing U.S. Catholics in overseas mission since 1911. Volunteers are Needed for Our Annual Town-wide Clean-Up Day "Stash the Trash” scheduled for Saturday, April 26th beginning at 2:00 p.m. rain or shine.  Volunteers will meet at pre-determined locations throughout Ossining and work for 3 hours to clean up the trash which has accumulated during the winter months in our parks and along our roadsides.  Plan to bring any necessary tools, especially heavy work gloves and please plan on staying for all 3 hours if possible. Children old enough to work with supervision are encouraged to bring their parents to join us. Plastic bags will be provided. Filled bags are picked up at special locations.  Thank you refreshments will start at the Community Center and at the Briarcliff Youth Center for Briarcliff residents. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.  Coordinating the event this year will be the Ossining H.S. Interact Club. Dominican Sisters Family Health Service Westchester Chordsmen Chorus Benefit Concert The concerts will be held at the Ossining High School Auditorium on Thursday, May 15th at 7:30 p.m. Sixty members of this award-winning four-part a cappella chorus will perform a repertoire that extends beyond barbershop roots and includes Broadway show tunes, doo-wop, traditional, gospel and contemporary songs arranged in four-part harmony for tenor, lead, baritone and bass singers.  Tickets are $25 per person, $20 Senior Citizens, $30 at the door; for more information please call 941-1710 x 133.   


The final program of Collegium Westchester’s season is scheduled for June 7 at 8 pm and will feature two pieces quoting the Lutheran chorale A Mighty Fortress Is Our God: Bach’s Cantata 80 and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5. March’s Energy Saving Ideas – For the Home Office

-If you have Energy Star labeled office equipment (computer, fax, printer, scanner), remember to activate the sleep function.  In a small office, Energy Star equipment can save about $470 per year.

-Install motion detectors so that lights are on only when you need them.  Encourage your employer to do the same.

-Use desk or table lamps instead of overhead lights.

-Change furnace filters according to manufacturer’s recommendation.

The Great Duck Race of Ossining scheduled for May 17, 2008.  Festivities begin at 2:00 p.m.  Race begins at 3:00 p.m.  Sponsored by the Ossining Rotary Club whose motto is “Service Above Self”.  This Rotary organization is dedicated to helping others; proceeds from the race will be used to help support local community organizations, Safety Net Groups and many hands-on projects right here in Ossining.  In addition proceeds from the Duck Race will also support the Ossining Interact Club’s efforts to raise money to fund a water project in Honduras.  Many ducks have been sold already so make sure you get yours A.S.A.P.  Ducks are $10/each and there will only be 2,500 ducks sold this year…Just think Duck Race...Ask any Rotarian or Interactor for more information.  Go to the web page or Rotary District 7230 at to see the great work of our local district.  If you would like to mail your duck order, please send to:  The Great Duck Race of Ossining, c/o the Rotary Club of Ossining, P.O.
