The Village of Ossining is seeking candidates for the Environmental Advisory Council and the Historic Review Commission The Village Board has introduced a local law increasing the number of members on the Environmental Advisory Council and is seeking individuals to serve. We are also looking for individuals to serve on the Historic Review Commission. Anyone wishing to apply for either of these positions should send a letter of interest and resume to the Linda G. Registration for the 2008 Jesse Collyer Youth Sports Baseball/Softball Season Has Begun. Boys and girls ages 5-16 (17 for the girls) can sign up for the upcoming season by going to the website, www.jcysports.org and download a registration form. You can also visit the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center, 95 Broadway and pick up a form at the front desk.
First Half 2008 Village taxes are due January 31st. Village property taxes are collected by the Village of Ossining Finance Department. Tax Payments should be made payable to the “Village of Ossining” and mailed to: The Village of Ossining, Finance Department 2nd Floor, 16 Croton Avenue, Ossining, NY 10562. If you would like to pay your taxes in person, the Village Finance Department regular office hours are Monday through Friday 9 – 4:30 p.m.; there will be extended office hours beginning Monday, January 28th thru Thursday, January 31st, during this time the office will open at 8:00 am and will close at 6:00 pm. The office will also be open on Saturday January 26, 2008 from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm. If you would like to pay your taxes online go to the village’s website www.villageofossining.org, click on the link on the nav bar located on the left side and follow the instructions. To access your property, you will need information found on the property tax bill. While you’re there you can also check out the Village of Ossining 2008 Budget click on the link on the Nav bar to view. For additional information please call (914) 941-2581.
Second half school taxes are due January 31st School taxes are paid to the Town of Ossining on the third floor of the Municipal Building, 16 Croton Avenue, Ossining. The penalty for late payment after January 31 is 10%. If you wish to pay your Town taxes on-line, using a credit card or online checking, go to the Town website at www.townofossining.com (please note there are additional fees to pay Town taxes on-line) for additional information please call 762-8790.
"These Are Our Forebears" is a proposed photo exhibit of the ancestors of the many racial, ethnic, religious, and social groups from around the world who have settled in Ossining, some more recently than others. The exhibit is being organized by former Ossining Mayor Miguel Hernández , a military historian and genealogist, and he wants to include your ancestors regardless of their birth place, in the show. Accordingly, he is urging all members of the Ossining community to send him copies of photographs of their direct ancestors or other relations who came to the United States or were native born at any time in history. Your photo must include some identifying and descriptive information for an informative label that will help show visitors better understand and appreciate the photo. At minimum, the following information is needed and should be on the back of the picture: name of the person(s) in the photo and your name and relationship to the person. Other optional information you might include: the occasion for the photo, for example wedding, birthday, graduation, anniversary, holiday etc. if it is not self-explanatory, and any other information such as place of birth the date or approximate time period when it was taken and that you think will provide context for the picture. Copies of your photographs should be on photographic paper and can be made inexpensively at CVS, Office Max, Office Depot etc. Copies should be 8" x 10" or larger and may be either black & white or color. Please mail photos to Mr. Hernandez, 10 North Water Street, Ossining, NY 10562, no later than March 30, 2008. Only copies are to be submitted, not originals, as they will not be returned. A workshop at Maggie Brown's School of Dance in Ossining on Saturday, February 9th 11-3 pm is an introduction to what “Be Dance Be Charmed” has to offer. The charms are Grace, Balance, Love, Peace, and Ease. Teaching the charms can happen at any age and any level. “Be Dance Be Charmed” is a fun, creative experience meant to enrich our world. They are also teaching a Self Esteem In Motion class which will integrate the awareness of ones beauty, confidence and power through movement. A tribal class is a chance to learn a fun combination to World Beat music infusing body and mind. The Free Groove Find Your Moves session is to dance your own expression, feel your own rhythm and incorporate some guided suggestions. Ossining Fire Department Receives Grant for Life-saving Equipment The Ossining Fire Department (lead by Chief Fred Steneck and Assistant Chiefs Thomas Reddy and Pete Connolly) is the recipient of a grant for 63 personal rescue harnesses. GLN Worldwide Ltd. partnered with Firemen’s Fund Insurance Company awarded a $10,743 grant to the Ossining Fire Department for 63 personal rescue harnesses. The grant check was presented to the Ossining Fire Department at the Ossining Village Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 15th. On behalf of the Village of Ossining, we thank GLN Worldwide Ltd. and the Firemen’s Fund Insurance for their generosity. And a special thank you to all the members of the Ossining Fire Department who volunteer their services, each day, every day, protecting the lives and property of Ossining residents.

"Great Music" our traditional January Jazz will happen on Sunday, January 27th when The Valerie Capers Jazz Ensemble will take center stage in the theater at OPL beginning at 3:00 p.m. The ensemble, which last performed with the library series in 2003, will play the music of Ellington, Porter, Bernstein, Gershwin and Jobin. -The Sunday Photogroup will open its new exhibit "Opus 11" at the library on February 2. The show runs through Feb. 28 and the opening reception is on Sunday, February 10th from 2-4 p.m. The exhibit is on the lower level and may be seen during regular library hours.
-The library will be sponsoring a Special Mid-Winter book sale of Children's books and non-book items (videos, games etc.) on Saturday, February 2 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. and Sunday, February 3rd from 12 noon - 4 p.m. The sale will take place in the Children's Program Room on the main level. The sale will only consist of material for children.
-Meet Neal Rechtman, author of the new book "The 28th Amendment" on Tuesday, February 5th at 7:30 p.m. Neal will be in the Board Room to discuss his timely and compelling political thriller that explores the very real potential for conflict between entertainment and politics in a media-defined age.
-AARP Tax Assistance will begin on Thursday, February 7th and continue on Thursdays through April 10th at the library. Time & Place: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The IRS trained & certified volunteers will be in the theater on the lower level. Those wishing to have their taxes prepared by the AARP volunteers must bring with them all necessary papers including a copy of last year's return.
-On Thursday, February 7th Teddy Leveille will be at the library to lead a 2 hour "Hand Beading Jewelry Workshop" starting at 7 p.m. Learn to bead a double strand necklace with metallic seed beads, Czech glass beads and with a sterling silver clasp. -In recognition of Black History Month, a special program featuring speaker Dr. Frederick Opie will be given on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:30 p.m. The program titled "The Beans and Green of Necessity: African-Americans and the Great Depression" is co-sponsored with the Ossining Historical Society Museum.
Maryknoll International Film Festival and Discussion The Lives of Others, the sixth offering of the Maryknoll International Film Festival sponsored by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be shown on Friday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m., at the Maryknoll Society Center, 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. The series of nine monthly offerings titled, Life through Death: God’s Self-sacrificing Love Revealed in Relationships, continues with The Lives of Others, a 2006 German film from director Florian Henckel von Donnersmack.
