Ossining High School Interact Club presents $2,000 Check to ShelterBoxUSA for two ShelterBoxes  The purpose of Shelter Box USA, Inc. is to provide victims of disaster with shelter, by supporting the efforts of the Shelter Box Trust.   Shelter Box is a grassroots Rotary club project which has rapidly grown to an international level.  The Shelter Box project was conceived and developed by Tom Henderson, a member of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall District, in Great Britain as their Millennium Service Project. Struck with the urgent world-wide need for a self-contained emergency shelter unit when disaster occurs, Tom designed a tent, researched suppliers and, through trial and error, developed the Shelter Box.  Working primarily through UK Rotary clubs, Tom and his Rotary club has succeeded in exposing the Shelter Box project to over 25 million Brits and, as a result, provided shelter for approximately 300,000 people in the last six years.  For additional information regarding the program go to http://www.shelterboxusa.org/

Ancestor Photo Exhibit  "These Are Our Forebears" is a proposed photo exhibit of the ancestors of the Ossining's diverse population who settled here, some more recently than others. (That diversity and extent of residency extends to the aboriginal American Indians who comprised numerous tribes with differing customs, traditions and languages.) The exhibit is being organized by former Ossining Mayor Miguel Hernández , a military historian and genealogist, and he wants to include your ancestors regardless of their birth place, in the show.

Accordingly, he urges all members of the public to contribute copies of photographs of their direct ancestors or other relations who came to the United States or were native born of immigrant ancestry  (especially but not exclusively) in Ossining and surrounding communities at any time in history.  Your photo must include some identifying and descriptive information for an informative label that will help visitors better understand and appreciate the photo.  At minimum, the following information is needed and should be on the back of the picture: name of the person(s) in the photo and your name and relationship to the person. Other optional information you might include: the occasion for the photo, for example wedding, birthday, graduation, anniversary, holiday etc. if it is not self-explanatory, and any other information such as place of birth the date or approximate time period when it was taken, and anything that you think will provide context for the picture.

Copies of your photographs should be on photographic paper and can be inexpensively made at CVS, Office Max, Office Depot etc., as they have machines that can be used for this purpose. These copiers are simple to use but someone on their respective staffs can help customers, if need be. The copies should be 8" x 10" or larger and may be either black & white or color.  You should mail the photos to Mr. Hernandez at 10 North Water Street, Ossining, NY 10562, no later than March 30, 2008.  He stresses that only copies are to be submitted, not originals, as they will not be returned.  The goal is to open the exhibit at the Ossining Public Library in August of 2008 . If  you have any questions, feel free to e-mail him at miguel.hdz@verizon.net or call him at 914-941-4920.  This will be a grand opportunity to honor your ancestors and to celebrate Ossining's diversity, its greatest asset. Don't miss out!
